[Termes IGN] Suez, canal deRésumé : (auteur) The Nile Delta is located very close to the Suez Canal, the main route for oil transport in the world, makes it prone to pollution from any accidental oil spills in the Mediterranean Sea. The coast of the Nile Delta is generally arcuate and highly exposed to waves and currents. The present study attempted to perform the environmental sensitivity of the shoreline to oil slicks. Six variables were incorporated together in order to determine the environmental sensitivity index (ESI). Data were collected from different resources and from in situ observations. Results showed that the ESI is generally high for the western section of the Nile Delta, particularly along Alexandria region. Low ESI was observed along the shorelines facing the coastal sand dunes at the middle part of the delta coast. The ESI is an effective approach to delineate the vulnerable coastal areas to marine oil pollution. [Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The Global Positioning System (GPS) is considered as one of the most powerful tools that are used in geodetic works. It is increasingly considered as an alternative tool for conventional surveying techniques. The goal of this research paper is to produce a methodology for generating topographic contour maps using the post-processed kinematic differential GPS technique (PPK-GPS). The performance of this technique is assessed by comparing it with the traditional spirit-leveling technique taking into consideration the accuracy, time, and cost. The study area is located along the Mediterranean coast in the Rosetta area of the middle Delta in Egypt with a total area of about 39 km2. The field work includes 14 control points and about 50,000 PPK observations. In addition, 20 check cross sections that extend along the coastal line from Rosetta to El Burullus cities were observed using both spirit-leveling and GPS-PPK techniques. The results of the comparison indicate that the PPK-GPS technique can be used instead of spirit leveling in producing a topographic contour map with an accuracy of about 20 cm in orthometric height. We find that the PPK-GPS technique reduces the estimated time of leveling works in our study area by about 70%. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The monitoring of land use/land cover changes along the north part of the Nile delta, Egypt is very important for the planner, management, governmental and non-governmental organizations and the scientific community. This information is essential for planning and implementing policies to optimize the use of natural resources and accommodate development whilst minimizing the impact on the environment. To study these changes along the study area, two sets of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data were used. TM data are useful for this type of study due to its high spatial resolution, spectral resolution and low repetitive acquisition (16 days). A post-classification technique is used in this study based on hybrid classification (unsupervised and supervised). Each method used was assessed, and checked in field. Nine land use/land cover classes are produced. The overall accuracy for a 1984 image is 78% and for a 1997 image is 80%. The objective of this study was to detect land use/land cover changes, and to assess the nature of future change following construction of the international coastal road which crosses the study area. [Termes IGN] Nil (delta du)Résumé : (Auteur) The coastal district between Baltiem and Gamasa towns represents the only remaining desert area in the northern pan of the Nile Delta. This area covers about 450 km and is occupied by various types of landforms including : beach, sandy plain, sand dune, wedand, sabkha, and evaporite crusts. The development plan of this region is facing a number of constrains which affect negatively the sustainability of development activities in this area. These constrains include : coastal erosion and accretion, sea level rise, and sand dune encroachment. The negative impact of these phenomena has been studied, in detail, using the multi-temporal analysis of remote sensing data as well as field and laboratory investigations. Monitoring changes in landuse-landcover has also been carried out using unsupervised classification of Landsat TM and SPOT images in years 1990 and 1995 respectively.
