[Termes IGN] Texas (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a spectral analysis of several coastal land cover types in South Padre Island, Texas using AISA+ hyperspectral remote sensing data. AISA+ hyperspectral data (1.5 metre) were acquired throughout the area on 9 March 2005. Data over mangrove areas were converted to percent reflectance using four 88 metre reflectance tarps (4%, 16%, 32% and 48%) and empirical line calibration. These data were then compared to percent reflectance values of other terrestrial features to determine the ability of AISA+ data to distinguish features in coastal environments. Results suggest that these data may be appropriate to discriminate coastal mangrove vegetation and provide researchers with high resolution spatial and spectral information to more effectively manage coastal ecosystems. [Termes IGN] surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) Rain cells and rain bands over the South China Sea off the coast of Hong Kong are studied by using multi-sensor satellite and ground-based meteorological data. These include synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) onboard the European ENVISAT satellite, weather radar images from the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), rain rate data acquired by the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) sensor onboard the F15 satellite of the American Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and the rain sensors onboard the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) satellite, cloud image of GOES-9 satellite, sea surface wind maps acquired by the scatterometer onboard the QUIKSCAT satellite, and meteorological data from weather stations in Hong Kong. Three rain events, typical of Hong Kong, are studied. The first event consists of a cluster of rain cells associated with the summer monsoon, the second one of rain cells aligned in a rain band generated by an upper-air trough, and the third one consists of small rain cells embedded in a cold front. It is shown that ASAR images, which have a resolution of 30 m in the Image Mode (IM) and 150 m resolution in the Wide Swath Mode (WSM), yield much more detailed information on the spatial structure of rain events over the ocean than data obtained from SSSM/I and the rain sensors onboard the TRMM satellite. The precipitation radar (PR) onboard TRMM, which is the rain measuring instrument flown in space with the next best resolution, has a resolution of only 4 km. However, the disadvantage of SAR is that it is sometimes difficult to identify SAR signatures visible on SAR images of the sea surface unambiguously as caused by rain events. By comparing SAR images with simultaneously acquired weather radar images of the Hong Kong Observatory, a better knowledge of radar signatures on SAR images resulting from rain events over the ocean is obtained. This knowledge then helps greatly in detecting rain events on SAR images which are acquired over ocean areas, which are not in the reach of weather radar stations. SAR images containing radar signature of rain events allow a much more detailed study of fine-scale structures of rain events over the World’s ocean, in particular of clusters of rain cells, than any other sensor presently flown in space. [Termes IGN] spectrométrieRésumé : (Auteur) A comprehensive canopy characterization of forests is derived from the combined remote sensing signal of imaging spectrometry and large footprint LIDAR. The inversion of two linked physically based Radiative Transfer Models (RTM) provided the platform for synergistically exploiting the specific and independent information dimensions obtained by the two earth observation systems. Due to its measurement principle, LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) is particularly suited to assess the horizontal and vertical canopy structure of forests, while the spectral measurements of imaging spectrometry are specifically rich on information for biophysical and -chemical canopy properties. In the presented approach, the specific information content inherent to the observations of the respective sensor was not only able to complement the canopy characterization, but also helped to solve the ill-posed problem of the RTM inversion. The theoretical feasibility of the proposed earth observation concept has been tested on a synthetic data set generated by a forest growth model for a wide range of forest stands. Robust estimates on forest canopy characteristics were achieved, ranging from maximal tree height, fractional cover (fcover), Leaf Area Index (LAI) to the foliage chlorophyll and water content. The introduction of prior information on the canopy structure derived from large footprint LIDAR observations significantly improved the retrieval performance relative to estimates based solely on spectral information. [Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission distinguished itself as the first near-global spaceborne mission to demonstrate direct sensitivity to vertical vegetation structure. Whether this sensitivity is viewed as exploitable signal or unwanted bias, a great deal of interest exists in retrieving vegetation canopy height information from the SRTM data. This study presents a comprehensive application-specific assessment of SRTM data quality, focusing on the characterization and mitigation of two primary sources of relative vertical error: uncompensated Shuttle mast motion and random phase noise. The assessment spans four test sites located in the upper Midwestern United States and examines the dependence of data quality on both frequency, i.e., C-band vs. X-band, and the number of acquired datatakes. The results indicate that the quality of SRTM data may be higher than previously thought. Novel mitigation strategies include a knowledge-based approach to sample averaging, which has the potential to reduce phase noise error by 43 to 80%. The strategies presented here are being implemented as part of an ongoing effort to produce regional- to continental-scale estimates of vegetation canopy height within the conterminous U.S. Copyright Elsevier Numéro de notice : A2007-068 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2006.09.007 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2006.09.007 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=28433
