Sentinel-1 satellites provide regular Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) acquisitions that are potentially useful to monitor these areas, but they can be affected by temporal decorrelation due to rapid changes in the surface. The application of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) therefore seems difficult due to loss of coherence. On the other hand, Corner Reflectors (CR) can be used as coherent targets in SAR images for accurate displacement measurement thanks to their strong backscattering property and temporal stability. The use of CRs in multi-temporal InSAR analysis in Alpine mountain areas can thus be beneficial. In this study, we present a comparison between triangular and rectangular CRs, based on Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurements in an anechoic chamber and on long-term experiments over the Argentière glacier and the surrounding slopes and moraine. The visibility in both summer and winter of 10 CRs installed on the test site was investigated. As this area is exposed to heavy precipitation including snow falls, two perforated CRs were tested. The amplitude stability and the phase error of each CR were estimated. A precise tracking of two CRs installed at the glacier surface was also able to measure the displacement of the Argentière glacier, giving results close to previous GPS measurements. Furthermore, a Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) study was conducted, using the most stable CR as reference point to estimate slope instabilities, which led to the identification of an area corresponding to a tectonic fault called “Faille de l’angle”. The precise absolute locations of the CRs were successfully estimated and PS heights were compared with a LiDAR-based (Light Detection And Ranging) digital elevation model (DEM) and GPS measurements. [Termes IGN] planification côtièreRésumé : (auteur) Coastal habitats provide a plethora of ecosystem services, yet they undergo continuous pressure and degradation due to the human-induced climate change. Conservation and management imply continuous monitoring and mapping of their spatial distribution at first. The present study explores the capabilities of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission and the contribution of its coastal aerosol band 1 (443 nm) for the mapping of the dominant Mediterranean coastal marine habitats and the bathymetry in three survey sites in the East Mediterranean. The selected sites have shallow to deep habitats and a high variability of oceanographic and seabed morphological conditions. The major findings of our study demonstrate the advantages of the downscaled Sentinel-2 coastal aerosol band 1 for both optically shallow habitat and satellite-derived bathymetry mapping due to its great water penetration. The use of Sentinel-2 band 1 allows detection of Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds down to 32.2 m of depth. Sentinel-2 constellation with its 10-m spatial resolution at most of the spectral bands, 5-day revisit frequency and open data policy can be an important tool to provide crucial missing information on the spatial distribution of coastal habitats and on their bathymetry distribution, especially in data-poor and/or remote areas with large gaps in a retrospective, rapid and non-intrusive manner. As such, it becomes a crucial ally for the conservation and management of coastal habitats globally. [Termes IGN] signalisation routièreRésumé : (Auteur) Pavement markings are produced with retroreflective materials to enhance visibility for motorists, particularly at night. Retroreflectivity evaluation throughout an extensive highway network for maintenance and asset management purposes is a critical, yet challenging task for transportation agencies because visual evaluation can often be subjective and inconsistent, while field measurement can be time-consuming. Mobile Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) datasets can potentially provide a safe, cost-effective, and reliable method of performing the required evaluation. This paper presents an empirical model for radiometric calibration of Lidar intensity information from the Leica Pegasus:Two system for pavement marking evaluation. The model was developed using dense handheld retroreflectometer measurements and mobile Lidar data collected in a variety of geometric configurations on a test site consisting of various markings with varying degrees of wear. The quantitative accuracy assessment of the proposed radiometric calibration model for estimating retroreflectivity was conducted to another independent dataset collected in different lanes and system configurations. [Termes IGN] répartition géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Integrating the Red Edge channel in satellite sensors is valuable for plant species discrimination. Sentinel-2 MSI and Rapid Eye are some of the new generation satellite sensors that are characterized by finer spatial and spectral resolution, including the red edge band. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the red edge band of Sentinel-2 and Rapid Eye, for mapping festuca C3 grass using discriminant analysis and maximum likelihood classification algorithms. Spectral bands, vegetation indices and spectral bands plus vegetation indices were analysed. Results show that the integration of the red edge band improved the festuca C3 grass mapping accuracy by 5.95 and 4.76% for Sentinel-2 and Rapid Eye when the red edge bands were included and excluded in the analysis, respectively. The results demonstrate that the use of sensors with strategically positioned red edge bands, could offer information that is critical for the sustainable rangeland management. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) This study examines the consistency and representativeness differences of daily integrated water vapour (IWV) data from ERA-Interim reanalysis and GPS observations at 120 global sites over a 16-year period (1995–2010). Various comparison statistics are analysed as a function of geographic, topographic, and climatic features. A small (±1 kg m−2) bias is found in the reanalysis across latitudes (moist in northern and southern midlatitudes and dry in the tropics). The standard deviation of daily IWV differences is generally below 2 kg m−2 but peaks in the northern and southern storm-track regions. In general, the larger IWV differences are explained by increased representativeness errors, when GPS observations capture some small-scale variability that is not resolved by the reanalysis. A representativeness error statistic is proposed which measures the spatiotemporal variability in the vicinity of the GPS sites, based on reanalysis data at the four surrounding grid points. It allows to predict the standard deviation of daily IWV differences with a correlation of 0.73. In general, representativeness differences can be reduced by temporal averaging and spatial interpolation from the four surrounding grid points. A small number of outlying cases (15 sites) which do not follow the general tendencies are further examined. It is found that their special topographic and climatic features strongly enhance the representativeness errors (e.g. steep topography, coastlines, and strong seasonal cycle in monsoon regions). Discarding these sites significantly improves the global ERA-Interim and GPS comparison results. The selection of sites a priori, based on the representativeness error statistic, is able to detect 11 out of the 15 sites and improve the comparison results by 20 % to 30 %.
