[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a set of multi-spectral images were used to locate and identify the irregular settlements zones in the Athens metropolitan area. To achieve this goal, indexes-Brightness Index and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-and supervised classification are computed and applied to the images. In order to locate and identify these regions, common biophysical characteristics related to the urban and suburban landscape structures were identified. Five types of biophysical class were distinguished: (1) inner dense city with high buildings and absence of vegetation; (2) suburban areas with recent construction of buildings and absence of vegetation ; (3) green suburban areas; (4) high-density vegetation zones; and (5) recent forest fire regions. Some limitations are presented and discussed due to confusion of land-cover types between bare land and recent constructed areas, or between various types of vegetation and some urban green zones. Results are integrated within a Geographical Information System (GIS), allowing the user to check the legaI situation of the classified areas using the Urban Plan of Athens (1983-1995) documentation. This facilitates a proposal and representation of topology of irregular settlements. Such techniques might be very fruitful for developing countries or recently industrialized ones to identify speciflic irregular settlements. [Termes IGN] subsidenceRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite radar interferometry can be used to spatially monitor small vertical ground deformations. When millimeter accuracy is required, the differential interferometry technique is hampered by the ambiguity with atmospheric artifacts. It is also often difficult to obtain a precise evaluation of the kinematic evolution of ground deformations from a set of time, randomly distributed interferograms. We present the results of a least-squares approach coupled with a temporal filtering and applied to a large data set over the City of Paris. The mean deformation rate and a map of areas affected by time, non-linear deformation events are presented. We show that this approach, which provides a chronologically ordered set of phase screens, allows the retrieval of the kinematic Parameters of ground deformations as low as 1 to 2 mm per year. Subsiding areas have been detected, and their evolution in time has been quantified. Such an approach can be useful to fully characterize the kinematic evolution of ground deformations in major cities or desertic areas where large areas have a high degree of coherence and where millimeter accuracy is often required. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Most multi-source forest inventory (MSFI) applications have thus far been based on the use of medium resolution satellite imagery, such as Landsat TM. The high plot and stand level estimation errors of these applications have, however, restricted their use in forest management planning. One reason suggested for the high estimation errors has been the coarse spatial resolution of the imagery employed. Therefore, very high spatial resolution (VHR) imagery sources provide interesting data for stand-level inventory applications. However, digital interpretation of VHR imagery, such as aerial photographs, is more complicated than the use of traditional satellite imagery. Pixel-by-pixel analysis is not applicable to VHR imagery because a single pixel is small in relation to the object of interest, i.e. a forest stand, and therefore it does not adequately represent the spectral properties of a stand. Additionally in aerial photographs, the spectral properties of the objects are dependent on their location in the image. Therefore, MSFI applications based on aerial imagery must employ features that are less sensitive to their location in the image and that have been derived using the spatial neighborhood of each pixel, e.g. a square-shaped window of pixels. In this experiment several spectral and textural features were extracted from color-infrared aerial photographs and employed in estimation of forest attributes. The features were extracted from original, normalized difference vegetation index and channel ratio images. The correlations between the extracted image features and forest attributes measured from sample plots were examined. Additionally, the spectral and textural features were used for estimating the forest attributes of sample plots, applying the k nearest neighbor estimation method. The results show that several spectral and textural image features that are moderately or well correlated with the forest attributes. Furthermore, the accuracy of forest attribute estimation can be significantly improved by a careful selection of image features. [Termes IGN] polarisationRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper a classification scheme is presented, that uses a knowledge-based approach, where the crops are first classified into broad classes, i.e. bare surfaces, cereal crops, root crops, spring crops, winter crops etc. Hereafter, the discrimination between the individual crop types within these broad categories is performed. The discrimination into the broad classes is performed using standard polarimetric parameters such as the backscatter coefficients both at linear and circular polarisations, correlation coefficient and phase difference. The classification into the individual crop types is possible for some of the crop types, whereas it may for instance be very difficult to discriminate between some of the cereal crops. This part of the classification process is not as well established as the first part, and both a supervised approach and a knowledge-based approach may be used. Both POLSAR and PolInSAR data may be included in the classification scheme. The classification approach has been evaluated using data from the Danish EMISAR, and quantitative results based on in-situ information are presented. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (auteur) The automatic classification of urban materials from airborne and spatial acquisitions remains difficult today because of two main reasons: the spatial resolution of the images and the need for pre-processing algorithms to extract ground surface intrinsic properties. This work examines the feasibility of using 8 spectral information distributed in the visible and the near-infrared spectral regions (0.4 - 1 μm), acquired at a 20 cm spatial resolution, for recognizing the urban materials. The motivation for this study is the development of very high spatial resolution sensors which has introduced a promising capability for the study of urban areas. In this study , an experiment campaign took place in Toulouse. The airborne measurements were carried out using 8 cameras associated with 8 narrow filters (30 nm). Ground spectral measurements of Toulouse's urban materials were performed within the configuration of the airborne acquisitions. These measurements allow us to determine and quantify three types of reflectance spatial variability. The results show that urban materials have low reflectances with no significant spectral features and are then difficult to discriminate. To determine which material classes could be discriminate over the 8 spectral bands of the airborne acquisitions, a statistical analysis was performed on the ground measurements. This analysis highlights that 5 material classes could be discriminated from good quality measurements.
