[Termes IGN] signal lidarRésumé : (Auteur) The extraction of structural object metrics from a next-generation remote sensing modality, namely waveform Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), has garnered increasing interest from the remote sensing research community. However, the raw incoming (received) LiDAR waveform typically exhibits a stretched, misaligned, and relatively distorted character. In other words, the LiDAR signal is smeared and the effective temporal (vertical) resolution decreases, which is attributed to a fixed time span allocated for detection, the sensor's variable outgoing pulse signal, off-nadir scanning, the receiver impulse response impacts, and system noise. Theoretically, such a loss of resolution and increased data ambiguity can be remediated by using proven signal preprocessing approaches. In this paper, we present a robust signal preprocessing chain for waveform LiDAR calibration, which includes noise reduction, deconvolution, waveform registration, and angular rectification. This preprocessing chain was initially validated using simulated waveform data, which were derived via the digital imaging and remote sensing image generation modeling environment. We also verified the approach using real small-footprint waveform LiDAR data collected by the Carnegie Airborne Observatory in a savanna region of South Africa and specifically in terms of modeling woody biomass in this region. Metrics, including the spectral angle for cross-section recovery assessment and goodness-of-fit (R2) statistics, along with the root-mean-squared error for woody biomass estimation, were used to provide a comprehensive quantitative evaluation of the performance of this preprocessing chain. Results showed that our approach significantly increased our ability to recover the temporal signal resolution, improved geometric rectification of raw waveform LiDAR, and resulted in improved waveform-based woody biomass estimation. This preprocessing chain has the potential to be applied across the board for h- gh fidelity processing of small-footprint waveform LiDAR data, thereby facilitating the extraction of valid and useful structural metrics from ground objects. [Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (Auteur) Time series of satellite data have an important role in the monitoring of regional and global ecosystem properties. Satellite images often present missing data due to atmospheric aerosol, clouds or other atmospheric conditions. Most methods proposed to minimise the effects of degradation and to restore signal values do not take into account the spatial and temporal correlation of the values in the pixels. The aim of this study was to propose and test a spatio-temporal interpolation method to reconstruct pixel values in MODIS data time series that are missing due to cloud cover or other image noise. The method presented and tested is an example of a hybrid Generalised Additive Model (GAM)-geostatistical space-time model, including the fitting of a smoother spatio-temporal trend and a spatial component to account for local details supported by information in covariates. The method is not limited by the type of noise or degradation of pixels values, latitude, vegetation dynamics and land uses. The application of cloud masks on the target image provided the data for a quantitative validation through the comparison between the modelled EVI values and those from the MODIS product. The method was able to restore data providing very good to adequate responses in series of simulations of missing data. The comparison of distributions showed good agreement and predictive capabilities. The spatio-temporal method always performed better and the use of kriged residuals was helpful for situations with high percentages of missing data. The spatial pattern and the local features were well preserved for cloud coverage Numéro de notice : A2012-494 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2012.06.003 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2012.06.003 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=31940

[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) We propose a novel method to select long-term coherent targets from a set of repeated-pass interferometric acquisitions. The major assumption is that targets are so close together to share the same optical path. This leads to an efficient singular-value-decomposition-based estimator of the targets' phase and, then, to PS detection. The estimated phase can be used to define the PS coherence for each image. Being sensitive to acquisition and processing artifacts, the PS coherence is a valuable tool for quality assessment of the interferometric stack. Results are shown with real data sets in both single and full polarizations. [Termes IGN] qualité radiométrique (image)Résumé : (Auteur) The TropiSAR campaign has been conducted in August 2009 in French Guiana with the ONERA airborne radar system SETHI. The main objective of this campaign was to collect data to support the Phase A of the 7th Earth Explorer candidate mission, BIOMASS. Several specific questions needed to be addressed to consolidate the mission concept following the Phase 0 studies, and the data collection strategy was constructed accordingly. More specifically, a tropical forest data set was required in order to provide test data for the evaluation of the foreseen inversion algorithms and data products. The paper provides a description of the resulting data set which is now available through the European Space Agency website under the airborne campaign link. First results from the TropiSAR database analysis are presented with two in-depth analyses about both the temporal radiometric variation and temporal coherence at P-band. The temporal variations of the backscatter values are less than 0.5 dB throughout the campaign, and the coherence values are observed to stay high even after 22 days. These results are essential for the BIOMASS mission. The observed temporal stability of the backscatter is a good indicator of the expected robustness of the biomass estimation in tropical forests, from cross-polarized backscatter values as regarding environmental changes such as soil moisture. The high temporal coherence observed after a 22-day period is a prerequisite for SAR Polarimetric Interferometry and Tomographic applications in a single satellite configuration. The conclusion then summarizes the paper and identifies the next steps in the analysis.
