By incorporating several improvements to the forest height inversion and mosaicking approach, the height estimation accuracy along with the robustness of this approach have been considerably enhanced from its originally reported accuracy of RMSE of 3-4 m at a 20-hectare aggregated pixel size to RMSE of 3-4 m on the order of 3-6 hectares. Furthermore, practical data processing schemes are provided in detail. Extensive validation results are demonstrated which include: 1) a forest height mosaic (total area of 11.6 million hectares) is generated for the U.S. states of Maine and New Hampshire using Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) ALOS-1 InSAR correlation data and a small airborne lidar strip (44 000 hectares); 2) the mosaic height estimates are further compared with the available airborne lidar data and field measurements over both flat and mountainous areas; and 3) feasibility of using modern repeat-pass InSAR satellites with short repeat interval is also examined by using JAXA's ALOS-2 data. This simple and efficient approach is a potential observational prototype with much smaller error budget for the future spaceborne repeat-pass L-band InSAR systems with small spatial baseline and moderate/large temporal baseline (such as NISAR) in combination with lidar (such as GEDI) on the application of large-scale forest height/biomass mapping. It also serves as a complementary tool to the spaceborne single-pass InSAR systems using InSAR/PolInSAR methods when full-pol data are not available and/or when the underlying topography slope causes problems for these approaches. Due to the high sensitivity of the C-band signal to vegetation, estimating the soil freeze/thaw (F/T) state directly from the measured backscatter is not feasible over dense vegetation, such as boreal forests. The presented method is based on applying a simple zeroth-order model to estimate the contribution of the ground and the forest canopy on the observed total backscatter. The retrieved ground and canopy backscatter values were compared with in situ information on soil F/T state. By using a linear least sum of square errors classification algorithm, the retrieved ground and canopy backscatter values representing frozen and thawed ground were successfully separated. The method was tested for various soil types and incidence angles. For soil types with higher water holding capacities and lower infiltration rates such as fine Haplic Podzol and Umbric Gleysol, the estimation accuracy of the F/T state was over 97%, whereas for drier, well-drained soil types such as Haplic Arenosol and Coarse Haplic Podzol it was over 94%. Estimation accuracy slightly increased with higher incidence angle. The method is not feasible in rocky terrain due to very low water content, or in wet snow conditions due to lack of penetration of the C-band SAR signal through wet snow. With low ancillary data and computational requirements, the proposed method is applicable for continuous near real-time monitoring of soil F/T state. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) In ground-based global positioning system (GPS) meteorology, atmospheric weighted mean temperature, Tm, plays a very important role in the progress of retrieving precipitable water vapor (PWV) from the zenith wet delay of the GPS. Generally, most of the existing Tm models only take either latitude or altitude into account in modeling. However, a great number of studies have shown that Tm is highly correlated with both latitude and altitude. In this study, a new global grid empirical Tm model, named as GGTm, was established by a sliding window algorithm using global gridded Tm data over an 8-year period from 2007 to 2014 provided by TU Vienna, where both latitude and altitude variations are considered in modeling. And the performance of GGTm was assessed by comparing with the Bevis formula and the GPT2w model, where the high-precision global gridded Tm data as provided by TU Vienna and the radiosonde data from 2015 are used as reference values. The results show the significant performance of the new GGTm model against other models when compared with gridded Tm data and radiosonde data, especially in the areas with great undulating terrain. Additionally, GGTm has the global mean RMSPWV and RMSPWV/PWV values of 0.26 mm and 1.28%, respectively. The GGTm model, fed only by the day of the year and the station coordinates, could provide a reliable and accurate Tm value, which shows the possible potential application in real-time GPS meteorology, especially for the application of low-latitude areas and western China. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Three-dimensional urban cartography is needed for city changes’ assessment. The variety of studies using 3D calculations of urban elements grows each year. Building and vegetation volumes are necessary to assess and understand spatio-temporal urban changeable environments. However, there are technical questions as to which method can improve 3D urban cartographic accuracy. The innovative part of this current study is the creation of a six-band hybrid obtained from LIDAR and WorldView2 synergy. Two different enhancement algorithms demonstrated the most important spectral features for the urban development and vegetation classes. Results indicated an improvement in accuracy by up to 21.3%, according to the Kappa coefficient. Both infra-red band and intensity band were the most significant, according to the principal components analysis. The synergy delimited classes and polygons, as well as the direct display of information regarding heights of elements and improving the extraction of roads, buildings and vegetation classes. Hence, three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer (RT) modeling is essential for understanding remote sensing signals of complex 3D vegetation covers. Due to the complexity of 3D models, one-dimensional (1D) RT models are commonly used to retrieve vegetation parameters, e.g., leaf area index (LAI), from remote sensing data. However, 1D models are not adapted to actual vegetation covers because they abstract them as schematic 1D layers, which is not realistic. Much effort is devoted to the conception of 3D RT models that can consider the 3D architecture of vegetation covers. However, developing an efficient 3D RT model that works on large and realistic scenes is still a challenging task. Major difficulties are the intensive computational costs of 3D RT simulation and the acquisition of detailed 3D canopy structures. Therefore, 3D RT models usually only work on abstracted scenes or small realistic scenes. Scene abstraction may cause uncertainties, and the small-scale approach is not compatible with most satellite observations (e.g., MODIS). The computer graphics community provides the most accurate and efficient models (i.e., renderers). However, the initial renderer models were not designed for accurate RT modeling, which explains the difficulty to use them for remote sensing applications. Recently emerged advanced techniques in computer graphics and light detection and ranging area (LiDAR) make it more possible to solve the above problems. 3D RT can be greatly accelerated due to the increasing computer power and improvement of rendering algorithms (e.g., ray-tracing acceleration and computational optimization). Also, 3D high-resolution information from LiDARs and photogrammetry become more accessible to reconstruct realistic 3D scenes. This approach requires new processing methods to combine 3D information and 3D RT models, which is of great importance for better remote sensing survey of vegetation. This thesis is focused on 1) Development of a 3D RT model based on recent ray-tracing techniques and 2) Retrieval of 3D leaf volume density (LVD) for constructing 3D forest scenes. This first chapter presents the development of an efficient 3D RT model, named LESS (LargE-Scale remote sensing data and image Simulation framework). LESS makes full use of ray-tracing algorithms. Specifically, it simulates multispectral BRF and scene radiative budget with a weighted forward photon tracing method, and sensor images (e.g., fisheye images) or large-scale (e.g. 1 km2) spectral images are simulated with a backward path tracing method. In the forward mode, a "virtual photon" algorithm is used to simulate accurate BRF with few photons. The backward mode is used to simulate thermal infrared images and also atmosphere RT. LESS efficiency and accuracy were demonstrated with a model intercomparison and field measurements. In addition, LESS has an easy-to-use graphic user interface (GUI) to input parameters, construct and visualize 3D scenes. 3D forest reconstruction is done with a simulated LiDAR dataset to assess approaches that retrieve LVD from airborne LiDAR data. The dataset is simulated with the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer model (DART). Note de contenu : 1- Introduction
