[Termes IGN] phaseRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) is an alternative to conventional stereoscopic SAR for extracting relative or absolute terrain elevation information. However, for different InSAR data-sets, the auxiliary parameters are different, which introduces differences in the SAR interferometry rigorous sensor model (RSM). The Rational Polynomial Coefficient (RPC) model is a generalised sensor model which makes full use of the auxiliary parameters of the satellite images, and the coefficients of the model are then solved by fitting the model to the RSM. Some work has been carried out previously to validate its substitutability for the SAR RSM, which is based on the Range–Doppler equations. Further, this paper aims to prove that the RPC model can also be used as a replacement for the InSAR phase equation and can be widely applied on different types of InSAR data-sets. Based on numerous tests, the modelling error of the RPC is analysed. This study found that the RPC model is suitable for InSAR data-sets and it can be used as a replacement for the phase equation. [Termes IGN] visibilité (optique)Résumé : (Auteur) Atmospheric visibility is an important input for road and air transportation safety, as well as a good proxy to estimate the air quality. A model-driven approach is presented to monitor the meteorological visibility distance through use of ordinary outdoor cameras. Unlike in previous data-driven approaches, a physics-based model is proposed which describes the mapping function between the contrast distribution in the image and the atmospheric visibility. The model is non-linear, which allows encompassing a large spectrum of applications. The model assumes a continuous distribution of objects with respect to the distance in the scene and is estimated by a novel process. It is more robust to illumination variations by selecting the Lambertian surfaces in the scene. To evaluate the relevance of the approach, a publicly available database is used. When the model is fitted to short range data, the proposed method is shown to be effective and to improve on existing methods. In particular, it allows envisioning an easier deployment of these camera-based techniques on multiple observation sites. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) A numerical simulator of satellite microwave radiometric observations of mountainous scenes, developed in a previous study, has been used to predict the relief effects on the measurements of a spaceborne radiometer. For this purpose, the trends of the error due to topography, i.e., the difference between the antenna temperature calculated for a topographically variable surface and that computed for a flat terrain versus the parameters representing the relief, have been analyzed. The analysis has been mainly performed for a mountainous area in the Alps by assuming a simplified land-cover scenario consisting of bare terrain with two roughness conditions (smooth and rough soils) and considering L- and C-bands, i.e., those most suitable for soil moisture retrieval. The results have revealed that the error in satellite microwave radiometric observations is particularly correlated to the mean values of the height and slope of the radiometric pixel, as well as to the standard deviations of the aspect angle and local incidence angle. Both a regression analysis and a neural-network approach have been applied to estimate the error as a function of the parameters representing the relief, using the simulator to build training and test sets. The prediction of the topography effects and their correction in radiometric images have turned out to be feasible, at least for the scenarios considered in this study. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) This work aims to contribute to the understanding of the influence of the ionospheric layer height (ILH) on the thin layer ionospheric model (TLIM) used to retrieve ionospheric information from the GNSS observations. Particular attention is paid to the errors caused on the estimation of the vertical total electron content (vTEC) and the GNSS satellites and receivers inter-frequency biases (IFB), by the use of an inappropriate ILH. The work relies upon numerical simulations performed with an empirical model of the Earth’s ionosphere: the model is used to create realistic but controlled ionospheric scenarios and the errors are evaluated after recovering those scenarios with the TLIM. The error assessment is performed in the Central and the northern part of the South American continents, a region where large errors are expected due to the combined actions of the Appleton Anomaly of the ionosphere and the South-Atlantic anomaly of the geomagnetic field. According to this study, there does not exist a unique ILH that cancels the vTEC error for the whole region under consideration. The ILH that cancels the regional mean vTEC error varies with the solar activity and season. The latitude-dependent conversion error propagates to the parameters of the model used to represent the latitudinal variation on the vTEC on the ionospheric layer, and to the IFB, when these values are simultaneously estimated from the observed sTEC. Besides, the ILH that cancels the regional mean vTEC error is different from the one that cancels the IFB error and the difference between both ILH varies with the solar activity and season.
