[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) This study aims to assess the contribution of ENVISAT ASAR data for the monitoring of the littoral plains of Kourou and Saint Laurent du Maroni (French Guyana). It presents results of qualitative and quantitative analyses of SAR ERS and ASAR ENVISAT data based on the following comparative criteria for landscape types discrimination: 1- Comparison between SAR ERS and ASAR ENVISAT in same configuration acquisition (mode IS2), 2- Seasonal influences (dry vs rainy season effects), 3- Incidence angle influences (exploitation of ASAR ENVISAT incidence angle range), 4- Polarization influences (exploitation of ASAR ENVISAT Image and Alternating Polarization modes data). The calibration of the different considered radar images allows their inter comparison in order to obtain information about landscape type's properties (dielectric, moistures, real evolutions) and on homogeneous parcel of land. The study showed that different parameters, like the season, the incidence angle, and the polarization, strongly influence the radar signal observed over such landscape types. In addition, results show that ASAR-IS2 mode, similar to ERS-SAR configuration ensures the continuity of SAR ERS-1&2 for land surface monitoring. However, it arises that discrimination between various types of landscape are confusing when analysing the backscattering coefficient values alone. The backscattering coefficients only cannot allow discriminating all the different landscape classes. Other parameters like texture, structure, geographical position, form and size are needed for landscape type's discrimination from radar images. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The soil moisture experiments held during June-July 2002 (SMEX02) at lowa demonstrated the potential of the L-band radiometer (PALS) in estimation of near surface soil moisture under dense vegetation canopy conditions. The L-band radar was also shown to be sensitive to near surface soil moisture. However, the spatial resolution of a typical satellite L-band radiometer is of the order of tens of kilometers, which is not sufficient to serve the full range of science needs for land surface hydrology and weather modeling applications. Disaggregation schemes for deriving subpixel estimates of soil moisture from radiometer data using higher resolution radar observations may provide the means for making available global soil moisture observations at a much finer scale. This paper presents a simple approach for estimation of change in soil moisture at a higher (radar) spatial resolution by combining L-band copolarized radar backscattering coefficients and L-band radiometric brightness temperatures. Sensitivity of AIRSAR L-band copolarized channels has been demonstrated by comparison with in situ soil moisture measurements as well as PALS brightness temperatures. The change estimation algorithm has been applied to coincident PALS and AIRSAR datasets acquired during the SMEX02 campaign. Using AIRSAR data aggregated to a 100-m resolution, PALS radiometer estimates of soil moisture change at a 400-m resolution have been disaggregated to 100-m resolution. The effect of surface roughness variability on the change estimation algorithm has been explained using integral equation model (IEM) simulations. A simulation experiment using synthetic data has been performed to analyze the performance of the algorithm over a region undergoing gradual wetting and dry down. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) An automated approach to identifying landslides using a combination of high-resolution satellite imagery and digital elevation derivatives is offered as an alternative to aerial photographic interpretation. Previous research has demonstrated that per pixel spectral response patterns are ineffective in discriminating mass movements. This technique utilizes image segmentation and digital elevation data in order to identify mass movements based not only on their reflectance but also on their shape properties and their geomorphic context. Dividing the classification by process into debris slides, debris flows, and rock slides makes the method far more useful than methods that group all mass movements together. A hierarchical classification scheme is utilized to eliminate areas that are not of interest and to identify areas where mass movements are probable. A supervised classification is then conducted using spectral, shape, and textural properties to identify failures that were greater than 1 ha in area. The resulting accuracy was 90 percent for debris slides, 60 percent for debris flows, and 80 percent for rock slides. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Coal fire has been found to be a serious problem worldwide in coal mining processes. Coal fire burns valuable coal reserve and prevents access to proven reserve in the affected area. Moreover, it leads to severe environmental degradation of the region by an overall increase of the ambient atmospheric temperature, by the emission of obnoxious gases (e.g., SO2, NO, CO, CH4) along fissures and cracks and by causing land subsidence and collapse. Jharia Coalfield, Jharkhand, India, is known for being the exclusive storehouse of prime coking coal as well as for hosting the maximum number of known coal fires among all the coalfields in the country. In this paper, some of the important issues of coal fire mapping from satellite thermal IR data have been addressed in particular reference to Jharia Coalfield. Namely, these are: retrieval of true spectral radiance from raw digital data using scene-specific calibration coefficients of the detectors, thermal emissivity of surface materials to obtain kinetic temperature at each ground resolution cell of satellite data, field-based modelling of pixel-integrated temperature for differentiating surface and subsurface fire pixels in Landsat TM thermal IR data, identification of surface coal fire locations from reflected IR data and lateral propagation of coal fire. [Termes IGN] Vienne (capitale Autriche)Résumé : (Auteur) In this study, we use a technique referred to as Gaussian decomposition for processing and calibrating data acquired with a novel small-footprint airborne laser scanner that digitises the complete waveform of the laser pulses scattered back from the Earth's surface. This paper presents the theoretical basis for modelling the waveform as a series of Gaussian pulses. In this way the range, amplitude, and width are provided for each pulse. Using external reference targets it is also possible to calibrate the data. The calibration equation takes into account the range, the amplitude, and pulse width and provides estimates of the backscatter cross-section of each target. The applicability of this technique is demonstrated based on RIEGL LMS-Q560 data acquired over the city of Vienna.
