[Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) An accurate global carbon budget requires information on terrestrial carbon sink strength. Regenerating tropical forests are known to be important terrestrial carbon sinks but information on their location, extent and biomass (from which carbon content can be estimated) is incomplete. The use of remotely sensed data in optical wavelengths has been of limited use due to both the weak relationship between optical radiation and forest biomass and near-constant cloud cover in the tropics. L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter, however, is related positively to biomass (but only up to an asymptote of around 40-90T ha-1) and can be obtained independently of cloud cover. Both canopy structure and biomass change over time as pioneer species are replaced by early and late regenerating species. These structural changes are related to an increase in (i) tree height, (ii) tree species richness and (iii) canopy thickness and influence the roughness of the canopy surface and consequently SAR image texture. Therefore, we investigated the degree to which textural information could be used to increase the correlation between image tone (backscatter) and biomass. Field data were used to estimate the biomass of 37 regenerating forests plots in Brazilian Amazonia. Texture measures derived from local statistics, the grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and the variogram were evaluated using simulated images on the basis of their ability to identify significant differences in image texture independently of image contrast. The selected texture measures were applied to L-band JERS-1 (Japanese Earth Resources Satellite) SAR images and the correlation between backscatter and biomass was determined for regenerating tropical forests. A strong correlation was found for the texture measures and biomass. The ra2 (adjusted coefficient of determination), measuring the correlation between backscatter and biomass, increased from 0.74 to 0.82 with the addition of GLCM-derived contrast. The addition of image texture (GLCM-derived contrast) to image tone (backscatter) potentially increases the accuracy with which JERS-1 SAR data can be used to estimate biomass in tropical forests. [Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) This study evaluates six different approaches to classifying and mapping fire severity using multi-temporal Landsat Thematic Mapper data. The six approaches tested include: two based on temporal image differencing and ratioing between pre-fire and post-fire images, two based on principal component analysis of pre- and post-fire imagery, and two based on artificial neural networks, one using just post-fire imagery and the other both pre- and post-fire imagery. Our results demonstrated the potential value for any of these methods to provide quantitative fire severity maps, but one of the image differencing methods (ND4/7) provided a flexible, robust, and analytically simple approach that could be applied anywhere in the Continental U.S. Based on the results of this test, the ND4/7 was implemented operationally to classify and map fire severity over 1.2 million hectares burned in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Northern Great Plains during the 2000 fire season, as well as the 2001 fire season (Gmelin and Brewer, 2002). Approximately the same procedure was adopted in 2001 by the USDA Forest Service, Remote Sensing Applications Center to produce Burned Area Reflectance Classifications for national-level support of Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation activities (Orlemann, 2002). En effet, tout traitement qui modifie la radiométrie - comme les recalages en vue de la superposition de deux images - sont à proscrire avant d'avoir exploré complètement les informations fournies par l'image brute. Il faut de plus, en préalable à ce type de travaux, se créer un corpus de références sur le végétal urbain vu à travers l'image satellitale, car les informations recueillies ne permettent pas de se relier à des nomenclatures usuelles sans un glissement sémantique important. Une bibliothèque de références urbaines végétalisées a été mise au point après une série de travaux portant principalement sur deux villes et cinq images de capteurs et de saisons différentes. Ces références permettent de travailler sur d'autres villes comme Pékin, en particulier sur les marges en forte mutation. Several proposals for establishing a network of sensors for tsunami detection have since been put forward, including the concept proposed here. The Passive Reflectometry and Interferometry System (PARIS) makes use of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals reflected from the ocean's surface to perform mesoscale oceanaltimetry measurements, but it can equally well be applied to the task of rapid tsunami detection. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a method for sampling bidirectional reflectance information from multiangular airborne images. The method uses high resolution surface models to determinate the location of the imaged point on the ground and the orientation of the measured surface fragment. Since natural surfaces scatter incident radiation anisotropically, viewing and illumination conditions play a critical role in the interpretation of remotely sensed images. Thus, directionally defined reflectance data are needed for the modelling and correction of bidirectional effects on airborne optical images. Two test sites were imaged with a wide range of viewing azimuth angles at two different times. A high resolution HRSC-A stereo camera was used for image acquisition. Algorithms were implemented to reconstruct the image acquisition and retrieve the image samples from the HRSC-A image data. Combined with GPS and INS data, automatically derived high resolution digital surface models, including vegetation canopies, houses, etc., were used to determine the viewing and illumination geometry on the target surface. The brightness of a sample point was recorded as a measure for reflectance. A large number of directionally defined samples and a wide angular range of sample geometry were obtained. The images were first classified. Sampled reflectance data were verified by investigating the bidirectional reflectance of five agricultural and forest targets. Errors affecting the data quality, such as angular uncertainty, were studied. The multiangular image data, the developed sampling methods and the obtained bidirectional dataset proved to be applicable in investigations of bidirectional reflectance effects of natural targets. Airborne imagery combined with high resolution digital surface models permit extensive investigation of the bidirectional reflectance of a wide range of natural objects and large habitats.
