More than 15000 ships per year use it to access the Belgian port of Antwerp. A major dredging operation along the Westerschelde in the late 1990s has changed the tidal regime and increased tidal inundation of the salt marshes at high tide. Airborne remote sensing (CASI) has been acquired in 1998 and 2000 for three salt marsh sites in the Westerschelde estuary. An additional dataset exists for one site for 1993. The CASI data have been classified into maps of salt marsh vegetation. These provide an input for GIS-based modelling of sediment erosion/accretion. Maps of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values allow change detection: successional change of salt marsh vegetation is clearly demonstrated. The 1993, 1998 and 2000 data show a successional trend between 1993 and 1998 that is, in part, reversing between 1998 and 2000. Data also showed significant erosion of the salt marsh edge. Data are being used to extrapolate field measurements and help produce sediment budgets for the individual salt marshes. [Termes IGN] vectorisationRésumé : (Auteur) Land Cover Map 2000 (LCM2000) is a thematic classification of satellite image data covering the entire United Kingdom. The map updates and substantially upgrades the Land Cover Map of Great Britain (LCMGB), made in 1990-92. This paper outlines the character of the map through a description of its specification, production and outputs. The paper is aimed at users of LCM2000 and derived data who need to understand more of the map and its characteristics. The paper also outlines plans for making data available to researchers and applied users. The most important development in LCM2000 was the spectral segmentation of images to generate vector land parcels. Land cover was then identified by the spectral classification of the image data in these parcels. Classification used specially developed procedures which exploited known spatial, spectral and contextual characteristics of land cover. The resultant GIS incorporates, within its vector structure, detailed attribute data which record parcel-based land cover, plus information on class probabilities, data on withinparcel heterogeneity, information on landscape structure and context, cover information from LCMGB, together with a record of each parcel's processing history. [Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) Radiance data from a Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper image were used to study terrain effects in 284 4 pixel by 4 pixel quadrats in upland North Wales. The three semi-natural vegetation types examined responded differently to variations in slope and aspect. Short-cropped Agrostis grassland was the most uniform type ; and it reflected radiation in a solar-orientated diffuse manner. Variations in radiance detected from two rougher vegetation types suggested environmentally induced heterogeneity within the vegetation cover, related to aspect (Nardus grassland) or slope (Calluna heathland). The difference between reflected red and green light is proposed as a crude measure of photosynthesis that can discriminate between broad vegetation categories in undulating terrain.
