[Termes IGN] Wisconsin (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) We employed the discrete wavelet transform to reflectance spectra obtained from hyperspectral data to improve estimation of LAi in temperate forests. We estimated LAl for 32 plots across a range afforest types in Wisconsin using hemispherical photography. Plot spectra were extracted from AVIRIS data and transformed into wavelet features using the Haar wavelet. Separately, subsets of spectral bands and the Haar features selected by a genetic algorithm were used as independent variables in linear regressions. Models using wavelet coefficients explained the most variance for both broadleaf plots (R2 = 0.90 for wavelet features versus R2 = 0.80 for spectral bands) and all plots independent afforest type (R2 = 0.79 for wavelet features vs. R2 = 0.58 for spectral bands). The forest-type specific models were better than the models using all plots combined. Overall, wavelet features appear superior to band reflectances alone for estimating temperate forest LAI using hyperspectral data. [Termes IGN] incendie de forêtRésumé : (Auteur) Infrared (IR) remote sensing is increasingly used in studies of vegetation fire behavior, and high spatiotemporal resolution investigations often require data to be collected from airborne platforms, for example, standard helicopters. This paper aims to extend the range of conditions under which low-cost “handheld” thermal imaging cameras can be employed in such studies, particularly by enabling the effective and efficient geometric correction of thermal imagery collected from such devices, even when viewing far off-nadir (e.g., out of a side door or window). The approach is based on the automated detection of a set of fixed thermal “ground control points,” coupled with the use of a linear transformation matrix for warping the raw IR imagery to a fixed coordinate system. The output set of geometrically corrected brightness temperature and radiance images can be used to derive fire radiative power (FRP) and flame front rate of spread (ROS). We demonstrate and test our IR image processing methods on a series of case study fires, ranging from a small-scale laboratory to a 945-m2 outdoor experimental burn. We compare mapped information on FRP obtained from simultaneous nadir and off-nadir views, where we find differences that are in part controlled by flame structure and/or view angle. In the large open fire case, we compare the mapped fire radiative energy and ROS to simultaneously acquired aerial photography that provides the position of fuel and flames in high detail, and we demonstrate how these data sets can be used to explore various aspects of fire behavior. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Very high resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors represent an alternative to aerial photography for delineating floods in built-up environments where flood risk is highest. However, even with currently available SAR image resolutions of 3 m and higher, signal returns from man-made structures hamper the accurate mapping of flooded areas. Enhanced image processing algorithms and a better exploitation of image archives are required to facilitate the use of microwave remote-sensing data for monitoring flood dynamics in urban areas. In this paper, a hybrid methodology combining backscatter thresholding, region growing, and change detection (CD) is introduced as an approach enabling the automated, objective, and reliable flood extent extraction from very high resolution urban SAR images. The method is based on the calibration of a statistical distribution of “open water” backscatter values from images of floods. Images acquired during dry conditions enable the identification of areas that are not “visible” to the sensor (i.e., regions affected by “shadow”) and that systematically behave as specular reflectors (e.g., smooth tarmac, permanent water bodies). CD with respect to a reference image thereby reduces overdetection of inundated areas. A case study of the July 2007 Severn River flood (UK) observed by airborne photography and the very high resolution SAR sensor on board TerraSAR-X highlights advantages and limitations of the method. Even though the proposed fully automated SAR-based flood-mapping technique overcomes some limitations of previous methods, further technological and methodological improvements are necessary for SAR-based flood detection in urban areas to match the mapping capability of high-quality aerial photography.
