[Termes IGN] stabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) The weekly 0.144° resolution global vegetation index from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) has a long history, starting late 1981, and has included data derived from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors onboard NOAA-7, -9, -11, -14, -16, -17, and -18 satellites. Even after postlaunch calibration and mathematical smoothing and filtering of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from AVHRR visible and near-infrared channels, the time series of global smoothed NDVI (SMN) still has apparent discontinuities and biases due to sensor degradation, orbital drift [equator crossing time (ECT)], and differences from instrument to instrument in band response functions. To meet the needs of the operational weather and climate modeling and monitoring community for a stable long-term global NDVI data set, we investigated adjustments to substantially reduce the bias of the weekly global SMN series by simple and efficient algorithms that require a minimum number of assumptions about the statistical properties of the interannual global vegetation changes. Of the algorithms tested, we found the adjusted cumulative distribution function (ACDF) method to be a well-balanced approach that effectively eliminated most of the long-term global-scale interannual trend of AVHRR NDVI. Improvements to the global and regional NDVI data stability have been demonstrated by the results of ACDF-adjusted data set evaluated at a global scale, on major land classes, with relevance to satellite ECT, at major continental regions, and at regional drought detection applications. Employing geographically weighted regression, this paper models the observed relationship between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and key sociodemographic parameters (housing value, median household income, percent of residents in poverty, population density and percent of population white). Further, this paper demonstrates that geographically weighted regression utilized within a GISci framework can be effectively used to visualize urban human-environment interactions and that the spatial distribution of environmental resources co-varies with socioeconomic conditions. Finally, the paper demonstrates that greenness indicators derived from remote sensing data can be used as proxy measures for observed sociodemographic variables. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Leaf Area Index (LAI) is an important biophysical variable for characterizing the land surface vegetation. Global LAI product has been routinely produced from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra and Aqua satellite platforms. However, the MODIS standard LAI product is not continuous both spatially and temporally. To fill the gaps and improve the quality, we have developed a data filtering algorithm. This filter, called the temporal spatial filter (TSF), integrates both spatial and temporal characteristics for different plant functional types. The spatial gaps are first filled with the multi-year averages of the same day. If the values are missing over all years, the pixel is filled with a new estimate using the vegetation continuous field–ecosystem curve fitting method. The TSF integrates both the multi-seasonal average trend (background) and the seasonal observation. We implement this algorithm using the MODIS Collection 4 LAI product over North America. Comparison of the TSF results with the Savitzky–Golay filter indicates that the TSF performs much better in restoring the spatial and temporal distribution of seasonal LAI trends. The new LAI product has been validated by comparing with field measurements and the derived LAI maps from ETM+ data at a broadleaf forest site and an agricultural site. The validation results indicate that the new LAI product agrees better with both the field measurements and LAI values obtained from the ETM+ than does the MODIS LAI standard product, which usually shows higher LAI values. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) Tokat province is one of the least studied areas in Turkey. Updated spatial information about ferrous minerals (FM) and iron oxide (IO) is often required for studies focusing on environmental modelling, agriculture, and mining. In this study, FM and IO attributes of the province were assessed and mapped by evaluating Landsat-ETM+ satellite images. To avoid incorrect interpretations, dense plant or closed forest areas were determined using the normalized difference vegetative index, and excluded from the evaluation by masking. FM and IO index maps were produced using related algorithms and remote sensing tools. Classification and spatial analysis operations were conducted under the framework of Geographic Information Systems. A natural breaks method was employed for classification, and both indices were summarized in nine classes. The relationship between two index maps was investigated using a bi-variety correlation analysis. The correlation between two index maps (0.549) was found to be significant at the 1% level. Developed index maps were tested using ancillary data from previous studies in the area. The results were summarized at the administrative district level.
