[Termes IGN] spectromètreRésumé : (Auteur) ARES (Airborne Reflective/Emissive Spectrometer) is an airborne imaging spectrometer for remote sensing of land surfaces covering the wavelength regions 0.45-2.45 um and 8-13 um with 160 channels. The instrument is being built by Integrated Spectronics, financed by DLR and GFZ, and will be available to the scientific community from 2005 on. This contribution presents the design of the thermal spectrometer covering the 8-13 um region with 32 channels of 150 nm bandwidth while a separate paper treats the instrument specifications in the solar reflective region. The spectroradiometric design is based on scientific requirements derived from application scenarios comprising vegetation, soils of different compositions, and mineral exploration. The corresponding emissivity spectra are input for a simulation model that calculates at-sensor radiance spectra, resamples them with the channel-specific response functions, adds different amounts of sensor noise to the signal, and performs a retrieval to get the corresponding noisy surface emissivity spectra. The results of the simulation study indicate that a spectral wavelength accuracy of 3 nm and a sensor noise equivalent temperature of 0.05 - 0.1K are required for an accurate retrieval of emissivity spectra. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Land cover mapping is perhaps the most important application of remote sensing data. The abundance of mixed pixels (representing uncertainties in class allocation), particularly in coarse spatial resolution images, has always been known to lead to difficulties in producing accurate land cover classifications. Soft classification methods may help in quantifying uncertainties in areas of transition between various types of land cover. This study aims to estimate and accommodate uncertainties in all stages of a supervised classification process (i.e. training, allocation and testing) so as to produce accurate and meaningful land cover classifications. Three soft classification methods have been used-a probabilistic maximum likelihood classifier and the two classifiers based on fuzzy set theory (fuzzy (c-means and possibilistic c-means). Uncertainty and accuracy measures based on a fuzzy error matrix have been adopted to evaluate each classifier. All of the classifiers show an increase in classification accuracy when uncertainty is appropriately accounted for in all stages of the supervised classification. In particular, the possibilistic c-means classifier produced the highest map and individual class accuracy and has been found to be more robust to the existence of uncertainties in the datasets. The approach suggested in this paper can be used to generate accurate land cover maps, even in the presence of uncertainties in the form of mixed pixels in remote sensing images. The impact of the precipitation estimates produced by the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) and Special Sensor Microwave/lmager (SSM/I) in a previously developed 1D variational continuous assimilation algorithm for assimilating tropical rainfall is shown on two hurricane cases. Results on the impact of the SeaWinds scatterometer on the intensity and track forecast of a mid-Atlantic hurricane are also presented. This work is the outcome of a collaborative effort between NASA and NOAA, and indicates the substantial improvement in tropical cyclone forecasting that can result from the assimilation of space-based data in global atmospheric models. [Termes IGN] thermal infrared multispectral scannerRésumé : (Auteur) The temperature-independent thermal infrared spectral indices (TISI) method is employed for the separation of land surface temperature (LST) and emissivity from surface radiances (atmospherically corrected satellite data). The daytime reflected solar irradiance and the surface emission at ~3.8 um have comparable magnitudes. Using surface radiances and a combination of day-night 2-channel TISI ratios, the ~3.8 um reflectivity is derived. For implementing the TISI method, coefficients for NOAA 9-16 AVHRR channels are obtained. A numerical analysis with simulated surface radiances shows that for most surface types (showing nearly Lambertian behavior) the achievable accuracy is ~0.005 for emissivity (AVHRR channel-5) and ~1.5 K for LST. Data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is used for calculation of atmospheric attenuation. Comparisons are made over a part of central Europe on two différent dates (seasons). Clouds pose a major problem to surface observations; hence, monthly emissivity composites are derived. Additionally, using TISI-based monthly composites of emissivities, a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)-based method is tuned to the particular study area and the results are intercompared. Once the coefficients are known, the NDVI method is easily implemented but holds well only for vegetated areas. The error of the NDVI-based emissivities (with respect to the TISI results) ranges between -0.038 and 0.032, but for vegetated areas the peak of the error-histogram is at ~0.002. The algorithm for retrieving emissivity via TISI was validated with synthetic data. Due to the different spatial scales of satellite and surface measurements and the lack of homogeneous areas, which are representative for low-resolution pixels and ground measurements, ground-validation is a daunting task. However, for operational products ground-truth validation is necessary. Therefore, also an approach to identify suitable validation sites for meteorological satellite products in Europe is described.
