[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) The mapping of the damage caused by natural disasters is a crucial step in deciding on the actions to take at the international, national, and local levels. The large variety of representations that we have observed leads to problems of transfer and variations in analysis. In this article, we propose a representation, Regular Dot map (RD), and we compare it to 4 others routinely used to visualise post-disaster damage. Our comparison is based on a user study in which a set of participants carried out various tasks on multiple datasets using the various visualisations. We then analysed the behaviour during the experiment using three approaches: (1) quantitative analysis of user answers according to the reality on the ground, (2) quantitative analysis of user preferences in terms of perceived effectiveness and appearance, and (3) qualitative analysis of the data collected using an eye tracker. The results of this study lead us to believe that RD is the best compromise in terms of effectiveness among the various representations studied. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (auteur) The Canadian Digital Elevation Model (CDEM) and the High-Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM) released by Natural Resources Canada are primary terrain data sources in Canada. Due to their different coverage, datums, resolutions, and accuracies, a standardized framework for national elevation data across various scales is required. This study provides new insights into the adoption of Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGS) to facilitate the integration of multi-source terrain data at various granularities. In particular, the Icosahedral Snyder Equal Area Aperture 3 Hexagonal Grid (ISEA3H) was employed, and quantization, integration, and aggregation were conducted on this framework. To demonstrate the modeling process, an experiment was undertaken for two areas in Ontario, taking advantage of parallel computing which was beneficial from the discreteness of DGGS cells. The accuracy of the modeled elevations was estimated by referring to the ground-surveyed values and was included in the spatially referenced metadata as an indicator of data quality. This research can serve as a guide for future development of a national elevation service, providing consistent, multi-resolution elevations and avoiding complex, duplicated pre-processing at the user’s end. Future investigation into an operational integration platform to support real-world decision-making, as well as the DGGS-powered geospatial datacube, is recommended. We define structured geographic objects as collections of adjacent areas with homogeneous semantics that are regularly arranged as spatial structures. Existing studies have concentrated on unstructured objects, which will lead to the structured ones losing part or even most of the typical characteristics during merging. Therefore, as a supplement to the existing mature merging method, a targeted method was proposed in this paper to address the merging problem of structured geographic objects. First, structured geographic objects were classified into four typical patterns, and they were identified automatically according to seven spatial structure parameters. Second, a Miter-type buffer transformation was introduced to extract the overall boundary of structured geographic objects, and areas inside the overall boundary were processed with the most appropriate merging operations for their pattern. Finally, the corresponding merged results of structured geographic objects were inserted back into the merged result of the original land-cover data by using the NOT operation, and the spatial conflicts near the boundary were adjusted. We test our method for a dataset of geographical census data for a city in China. The experimental results revealed that compared with state-of-the-art method, the proposed method produces more reasonable generalization result by effectively identifying and maintaining the typical spatial structures; moreover, the proposed method also preserves the planar tessellation characteristic of land-cover data and the balance of area variation in each land-cover class. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (auteur) The traditional approach to mobile phone positioning is based on the assumption that the geographical location of a cell tower recorded in a Call Details Record (CDR) is a proxy for a device's location. A Voronoi tessellation is then constructed based on the entire network of cell towers and this tessellation is considered as a coordinate system, with the device located in a Voronoi polygon of a cell tower that is recorded in the CDR. If Voronoi-based positioning is correct, the uniqueness of the device trajectory is very high, and the device can be identified based on 3–5 of its recorded locations. We investigate a probabilistic approach to device positioning that is based on knowledge of each antennas' parameters and number of connections, as dependent on the distance to the antenna. The critical difference between the Voronoi-based and the real world layout is in the essential overlap of the antennas' service areas: The device that is located in a cell tower's polygon can be served by a more distant antenna that is chosen by the network system to balance the network load. Combining data on the distance distribution of the number of connections available for each antenna in the network, we resolve the overlap problem by applying Bayesian inference and construct a realistic distribution of the device location. Probabilistic device positioning demands a full revision of mobile phone privacy and new full set of tools for data analysis. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Growing demand for wood products, combined with efforts to conserve natural forests, have supported a steady increase in the global extent of planted forests. Here, a two-phase sampling strategy for large-scale assessment of the total area and the total wood volume of fast-growing forest tree crops within agricultural land is presented. The first phase is performed using tessellation stratified sampling on high-resolution remotely sensed imagery and is sufficient for estimating the total area of plantations by means of a Monte Carlo integration estimator. The second phase is performed using stratified sampling of the plantations selected in the first phase and is aimed at estimating total wood volume by means of an approximation of the first-phase Horvitz-Thompson estimator. Vegetation indices from Sentinel-2 are exploited as freely available auxiliary information in a linear regression estimator to improve the design-based precision of the estimator based on the sole sample data. Estimators of the totals and of the design-based variances of total estimators are presented. A simulation study is developed in order to check the design-based performance of the two alternative estimators under several artificial distributions supposed for poplar plantations (random, clustered, spatially trended). An application in Northern Italy is also reported. The regression estimator turns out to be invariably better than that based on the sole sample information. Possible integrations of the proposed sampling scheme with conventional national forest inventories adopting tessellation stratified sampling in the first phase are discussed.
