[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Multi-resolution terrain models are an efficient approach to improve the speed of three dimensional (3D) visualizations, especially for terrain visualization in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). As a further development to existing algorithms and models, a new model is proposed for the construction of multiresolution terrain models in a 3D GIS. The new model represents multi-resolution terrains using two major methods for terrain representation: Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) and regular grid (Grid). In this paper, first, the concepts and formal definitions of the new model are presented. Second, the methodology for constructing multi-resolution terrain models based on the new model is proposed. Third, the error of multi-resolution terrain models is analysed, and a set of rules is proposed to retain the important features (e.g. boundaries of man-made objects) within the multi-resolution terrain models. Finally, several experiments are undertaken to test the performance of the new model. The experimental results demonstrate that the new model can be applied to construct multi-resolution terrain models with good performance in terms of time cost and maintenance of the important features. Furthermore, a comparison with previous algorithms/models shows that the speed of rendering for 3D walking/flying through has been greatly improved by applying the new model. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (Auteur) The use of 3D features within GIS bas been increasing due to the need to represent, query, manipulate, and analyse man-made objects in relationship to other 3D features related to the surface of the earth. This will yield an increased use of 3D boundary representations of the features. The spatial relationship between two or more features is often evaluated using a geometrical overlay of these features, which reveals whether these features overlap and-if they do-to which extent. We present the design of a 3D overlay algorithm which overlays 3D triangulated boundary representations through a constrained tetrahedral mesh. The intersections between the constrained facets of the 3D features are calculated on the fly and within a restricted neighbourhood. We can identify and reconstruct the overlaid parts of the 3D boundary representation within the tetrahedral mesh. The implementation is based on the Computational Geometry Algorithms Library, which proved to have the functionality needed but also has its limitations. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (Auteur) Current terrain modelling algorithms are not capable of reconstructing 3D surfaces, but are restricted to so-called 2.5D surfaces: for one planimetric position only one height may exist. The objective of this paper is to extend terrain relief modelling to 3D. In a 3D terrain model overhangs and caves, cliffs and tunnels will be presented correctly. Random measurement errors, limitations in data sampling and the requirement for a smooth surface rule out a triangulation of the original measurements as the final terrain model. A new algorithm, starting from a triangular mesh in 3D and following the subdivision paradigm will be presented. It is a stepwise refinement of a polygonal mesh, in which the location of the vertices on the next level is computed from the vertices on the current level. This yields a series of triangulated terrain surfaces with increasing point density and smaller angles between adjacent triangles, converging to a smooth surface. With the proposed algorithm, the special requirements in terrain modelling, e.g. breaklines can be considered. The refinement process can be stopped as soon as a resolution suitable for a specific application is obtained. Examples of an overhang, a bridge which is modelled as part of the terrain surface and for a 2.5D terrain surface are presented. The implications of extending modelling to 3D are discussed for typical terrain model applications. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) We propose an extension of map algebra to three dimensions for spatio-temporal data handling. This approach yields a new class of map algebra functions that we call "cube functions". Whereas conventional map algebra functions operate on data layers representing two-dimensional space, cube functions operate on data cubes representing two-dimensional space over a third-dimensional period of time. We describe the prototype implementation of a spatio-temporal data structure and selected cube function versions of conventional local, focal and zonal map algebra functions. The utility of cube functions is demonstrated through a case study analysing the spatio-temporal variability of remotly sensed, southeastern U.S. vegetation character over various land covers and during different El Nino/Southeastern Oscillation (ENSO) phases. Like conventional map algebra, the application of cube functions may demand significant data prepocessing when integrating diverse data sets, and are subject to limitations related to data storage and algorithm performance. Solutions to these issues include extending data compression and computing strategies for calculations on very large data volumes to spatio-temporal data handling.
