[Termes IGN] réductionRésumé : (auteur) Due to the large diversity of existing feature descriptors in content-based image retrieval, the image contents can be better represented by the joint use of several descriptors in order to explore their potentially complementary characteristics. This paper presents and discusses a strategy for fusion of the different multidimensional features involved, based on inverted multi-indices and dedicated to similarity search. Image descriptors are quantized separately and efficiently through dimension reduction techniques, before being combined in the inverted multi-indices. To exhibit its effectiveness, the proposal is evaluated on two datasets having different contents and sizes, facing several state-of-the-art approaches of image descriptor fusion. The obtained results reconfirm that the joint use of several descriptions improves similarity search, and show that our fusion proposal outperforms other solutions, while manipulating lower or similar volumes of features. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The study of the fluid flow process through porous media can bring valuable contributions in areas like oil exploration and environmental research. In this work, we propose an interactive tool, named VRFluid, that allows visual interpretation of the three-dimensional data generated by the simulation of the fluid flow the porous media. VRFluid comprises a virtual reality engine that provides stereo visualization of the three-dimensional data, and a simulation engine based on a dynamic percolation method to model the fluid flow. VRFluid is composed of two independent main threads, the percolation simulator and the rendering server, that can operate in parallel as a pipeline. We tested our tool on a region of a mature field database, supervised by geophysicists, and obtained images of the interior of the percolation data, providing important results for the interpretation and cluster formation process. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article seeks to address the gap between the quantitative, summative data that are typically engaged in geovisual analytics and the more personal, experiential ways of knowledge construction accentuated by qualitative GIS. By incorporating diverse forms of data within a high-dimensional conceptual framework, we set out a type of qualitative geovisual analytics. This approach is attentive to the epistemological limitations of singular data sources and highlights the multiple ways of exploring neighbourhoods. The article reports on a project that used an online survey, including collection of personal impressions of San Diego neighbourhoods based on street-level video. Three attribute spaces are conceptualized: survey respondents' characteristics, attributes of San Diego neighbourhoods, and characteristics of the words used to describe these neighbourhoods. The self-organizing map (SOM) technique was used to reduce the dimensionality of these attribute spaces for visual exploration. This approach makes several important contributions, including a demonstration of “scaling up” the work that has been done in qualitative GIS. It productively integrates experiential data with a geovisual analytics approach and reaffirms the multiple meanings of visualization. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Understanding the complex nature of movement data and integrating it sufficiently into visual analytics tools is largely missing in GIScience. A user experiment assesses quantitatively and qualitatively which path elements contribute to map readers’ ability to identify a moving object and its behaviour in visual displays of movement. Context was added as a control variable by showing the movement path either on a homogenous background or embedded in a terrain map. The analysis shows that participants mainly used the character of the line and the shape of the represented behaviour to interpret the visualisation. Independently of context information, participants use the same path elements. With this approach, we hope to provide a first stepping-stone to identify the key elements that contribute to map readers’ ability to understand and analyse movement behaviour with visual analytics tools.
