This report presents an attempt to comprehensively investigate the geometry of satel-lite radar images and their application to mapping tasks. It is motivated by the plan of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to launch in the near future a series of Earth satellites carrying synthetic aperture imaging radar systems. There are also advanced plans for the exploration of planet Venus using satellite imaging radar. A geoscience imaging radar might also be used on board the Space Shuttle.
The investigation essentially addresses the radargrammetric units of the single image, the stereo model, and the image block. But in an initial chapter some peculiarities of spaceborne ra-dar and those radargrammetric concepts will be discussed that set the satellite radar apart from the airborne. Only after this discussion will the first radargrammetric unit, namely the single radar image, be treated.
Stereo radar is then studied by evaluating the geometry of the individual radar stereo model and by an attempt to merge stereo radar measurements with independent external altimetry data. The largely theoretical treatment is complemented by a series of numerical experiments with the Apollo 17 ALSE data which represent the only satellite radar images that are thus far available.
The radargrammetric adjustment of blocks of overlapping radar image strips is the topic of subsequent theoretical and experimental analyses. This is based on computer simulations and prac-tical results from aircraft radar images.
An important task of the first side-looking radar on an Earth satellite will consist of map-ping the polar ice. In preparation for this task, arctic ice surveys were carried out by means of airborne radar. The radargrammetric results that have thus far been obtained are described in a final chapter of this report in order to exemplify a major radargrammetric task ideally suited for future Earth orbiting radar satellites.Numéro de notice : 28174 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Thèse étrangère Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=63521 Exemplaires(1)
