Authors from every region of the world who have emerged as leaders in the YouthMappers movement share their perspectives and knowledge in an accessible and peer-friendly format. YouthMappers are university students who create and use open mapping for development and humanitarian purposes. Their work leverages digital innovations - both geospatial platforms and communications technologies - to answer the call for leadership to address sustainability challenges. The book conveys a sense of robust knowledge emerging from formal studies or informal academic experiences - in the first-person voices of students and recent graduates who are at the forefront of creating a new map of the world. YouthMappers use OpenStreetMap as the foundational sharing mechanism for creating data together. Authors impart the way they are learning about themselves, about each other, about the world. They are developing technology skills, and simultaneously teaching the rest of the world about the potential contributions of a highly connected generation of emerging world leaders for the SDGs. The book is timely, in that it captures a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the YouthMappers movement’s ability to share emerging expertise, and one that coincides with a pivotal moment in the geopolitical history of planet earth whose inhabitants need to hear from them. Most volumes that cover the topic of sustainability in terms of youth development are written by non-youth authors. Moreover, most are written by non-majoritarian, entrenched academic scholars. This book instead puts forward the diverse voices of students and recent graduates in countries where YouthMappers works, all over the world. Authors cover topics that range from water, agriculture, food, to waste, education, gender, climate action and disasters from their own eyes in working with data, mapping, and humanitarian action, often working across national boundaries and across continents. To inspire readers with their insights, the chapters are mapped to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ways that connect a youth agenda to a global agenda. [Termes IGN] WorldviewRésumé : (auteur) In order to solve insufficient training data problem in remote sensing, a web platform was created so that registered users can generate labeled data for various classes in a dynamic structure. Users were asked to select representative pixel groups for the forest, hazelnut, shadow, soil, tea, and building classes with the polygon tool, and then assign a class label corresponding to each created polygon thanks to the help document displaying descriptive information regarding the locations, colors, textures and distributions of the classes in the image. Crowdsourcing was again used to test the accuracy of the tagged data produced by crowdsourcing. The created data set was overlaid with the original WV-2 image, and the correctness of the labels of the polygons was once visually verified. Finally, the WV-2 image, consisting of 40 patches, was classified with CNN and an average of over 95% accuracy was achieved. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) The adoption of technology in urban participatory planning with tools such as Virtual Geographic Environments (VGE) promises a broader engagement of urban dwellers, which should ultimately lead to the creation of better cities. However, the authorities and urban experts show hesitancy in endorsing these tools in their practices. Indeed, several parameters must be wisely considered in the design of VGE; if misjudged, their impact could be damaging for the participatory approach and the related urban project. The objective of this study is to engage participants (N = 107) with common tasks conducted in participatory sessions, in order to evaluate the users’ performance when manipulating a VGE. We aimed at assessing three crucial parameters: (1) the VGE representation, (2) the participants’ idiosyncrasies, and (3) the nature of the VGE format. The results demonstrate that the parameters did not affect the same aspect of users’ performance in terms of time, inputs, and correctness. The VGE representation impacts only the time needed to fulfill a task. The participants’ idiosyncrasies, namely age, gender and frequency of 3D use also induce an alteration in time, but spatial abilities seem to impact all characteristics of users’ performance, including correctness. Lastly, the nature of the VGE format significantly alters the time and correctness of users interactions. The results of this study highlight concerns about the inadequacies of the current VGE practices in participatory sessions. Moreover, we suggest guidelines to improve the design of VGE, which could enhance urban participatory planning processes, in order to create better cities. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (auteur) Interactive maps can be an important marketing tool for disseminating information about long distance walking trails and a way to value add to the recreation experience. Providing participatory functionality to maps by allowing users to share new information or refine existing information can greatly enhance user interest and improve the product. This research uses open source front and back end technologies to develop a single page, database driven participatory web map application for the Walk the Yorke Trail in South Australia. The development is based on and assessed through a user-centred design approach. The prototype participatory web map is assessed by cartographic experts, trail managers, and trail users. These evaluations indicate the validity of the design directions taken but highlight the need for information quality and quantity when encouraging participation from knowledgeable trail users, and the need for tools to ensure the continuing quality of further submitted information. [Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (auteur) Participatory landslide inventory mapping using the Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) mobile app is a promising method to produce a landslide inventory map. The aim of this research is to describe the development and implementation of the VGI mobile app for participatory landslide inventory mapping. The architecture VGI mobile app is developed on the basis of Free Open-source Software for Geospatial Application server-client software to ensure reproducibility and flexibility, and to reduce cost. Anyone can reproduce, modify, and share the code, which suggests improvement in the collective ability to use, prepare, and landslide inventory update. Landslide inventory using VGI mobile app shows that the tool and method successfully map landslides in the landslide prone area (Magelang Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia) with fairly high levels of effectiveness and convenience. Magelang Regency, one of the landslide prone areas in Java, is located in the intermountain basin surrounded by Menoreh Mountain, Merapi, Merbabu, Suropati-Telomoyo Complex, and Sumbing Volcano. In this study, landslide inventory mapping using VGI mobile app was applied in Magelang Regency by 17 volunteers from BPBD (Regional Agency for Disaster Management) Magelang Regency for three days. Landslides area occurred from 2017 to 2019 were properly identified and mapped by the volunteers. The sizes of landslides varied from 5.2 m2 to 4,632.5 m2, and the average was 208.2 m2. A team of volunteer was able to map 7-10 landslides per day. Participatory mapping using VGI mobile app reduces the time in transferring field data to a GIS database, in contrast to conventional participatory landslide inventory mapping. VGI mobile app allows users to provide new geographical landslide data, share landslide data rapidly, ensure consistency of landslide data, and improve accessibility of landslide data. The use of the VGI mobile app for participatory landslide inventory mapping provides new opportunities to improve risk assessment, preparedness, and early action and warning to landslide hazard.
