[Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (auteur) Physically-based reflectance models offer a robust and transferable method to assess biophysical characteristics of vegetation in remote sensing. Forests exhibit explicit structure at many scales, from shoots and branches to landscape patches, and hence present a specific challenge to vegetation reflectance modellers. To relate forest reflectance with its structure, the complexity must be parametrised leading to an increase in the number of reflectance model inputs. The parametrisations link reflectance simulations to measurable forest variables, but at the same time rely on abstractions (e.g. a geometric surface forming a tree crown) and physically-based simplifications that are difficult to quantify robustly. As high-quality data on basic forest structure (e.g. tree height and stand density) and optical properties (e.g. leaf and forest floor reflectance) are becoming increasingly available, we used the well-validated forest reflectance and transmittance model FRT to investigate the effect of the values of the “uncertain” input parameters on the accuracy of modelled forest reflectance. With the state-of-the-art structural and spectral forest information, and Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument imagery, we identified that the input parameters influencing the most the modelled reflectance, given that the basic forestry variables are set to their true values and leaf mass is determined from reliable allometric models, are the regularity of the tree distribution and the amount of woody elements. When these parameters were set to their new adjusted values, the model performance improved considerably, reaching in the near infrared spectral region (740–950 nm) nearly zero bias, a relative RMSE of 13% and a correlation coefficient of 0.81. In the visible part of the spectrum, the model performance was not as consistent indicating room for improvement. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Successful European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) regeneration is both of great ecological and economical importance in European forest ecosystems and severely threatened by climate change impacts. To increase our knowledge of beech regeneration dynamics under climate change and the potential for controlling it through forest management, we studied interactive effects of solar radiation (PHAR), water and nutrient availability on the height growth of artificially (AR) and naturally regenerated (NR) beech seedlings. The study was conducted in the framework of experimental canopy gaps, under the influence of the 2018/19 drought and heatwaves. We measured PHAR by means of hemispherical photography, approximated water availability based on the inverse of modeled fine root density distributions of overstorey beech (BGRB) and oak (BGRO) and approximated nutrient availability based on soil fertility (SF), derived from forest site mapping. Results indicate that seedling resource availability and resulting growth responses increase with canopy gap size and vary among locations within the gap. Multiplicative non-linear mixed models suggest that AR and NR relative height growth (RI) was best explained by interactive effects of PHAR, BGRB, BGRO and SF, which reflect complementary resource use patterns of beech seedlings. At optimal resource availability, AR reached a potential RI of 174%, which is about 20% higher compared to NR. While the low light growth responses of AR and NR both reflect saturation at 5 to 15% PHAR, depending on individual size and the availability of the remaining resources, NR showed a higher RI than AR at intermediate and high PHAR levels in cases of limited BGR and SF. In contrast to AR, NR growth was affected to a lesser extent by SF and BGRB and not significantly affected by BGRO. These results suggest that overstorey oaks have a lower effect on water availability of beech seedlings than overstorey beeches. Additionally, NR showed higher tolerance to water and nutrient limitation than AR, probably due to better root system development. In conclusion, site-specific potential for mitigating the effects of climate change on beech regeneration through forest management lies in the adaptation of silvicultural systems, i.e., the creation of canopy gaps larger than 200 m2, thus significantly exceeding the average gap size of the natural disturbance regime, and the choice of the regeneration method. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) To date, a variety of species potential distribution mapping approaches have been used, and the agreement in maps produced with different methodological approaches should be assessed. The aims of this study were: (1) to model Maritime pine potential distributions for the present and for the future under two climate change scenarios using the machine learning Maximum Entropy algorithm (MaxEnt); (2) to update the species ecological envelope maps using the same environmental data set and climate change scenarios; and (3) to perform an agreement analysis for the species distribution maps produced with both methodological approaches. The species distribution maps produced by each of the methodological approaches under study were reclassified into presence–absence binary maps of species to perform the agreement analysis. The results showed that the MaxEnt-predicted map for the present matched well the species’ current distribution, but the species ecological envelope map, also for the present, was closer to the species’ empiric potential distribution. Climate change impacts on the species’ future distributions maps using the MaxEnt were moderate, but areas were relocated. The 47.3% suitability area (regular-medium-high), in the present, increased in future climate change scenarios to 48.7%–48.3%. Conversely, the impacts in species ecological envelopes maps were higher and with greater future losses than the latter. The 76.5% suitability area (regular-favourable-optimum), in the present, decreased in future climate change scenarios to 58.2%–51.6%. The two approaches combination resulted in a 44% concordance for the species occupancy in the present, decreasing around 30%–35% in the future under the climate change scenarios. Both methodologies proved to be complementary to set species’ best suitability areas, which are key as support decision tools for planning afforestation and forest management to attain fire-resilient landscapes, enhanced forest ecosystems biodiversity, functionality and productivity. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Interest in mixed forests is increasing since they could provide higher benefits and positive externalities compared to monocultures, although their management is more complex and silvicultural prescriptions for them are still scarce. Growth simulations are a powerful tool for developing useful guidelines for mixed stands. Heureka and Motti are two decision support systems commonly used for forest management in Sweden and Finland respectively. They were developed mostly with data from pure stands, so how they would perform in mixed stands is currently uncertain. We compiled a large and updated common database of well-replicated experimental research sites and monitoring networks composed by 218 and 1,160 plot-level observations of mixed stands from Sweden and Finland, respectively. We aimed to evaluated the accuracy of Heureka and Motti basal area growth models in those mixed-species stands and to detect any bias in their short-term predictions. Basal area growth simulations (excluding mortality models) were compared to observed stand-level values in a period-wise process with update of the start values in each period. The residual plots were visually examined for different stand mixtures: Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.)-birch (Betula spp), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)-birch and Scots pine-Norway spruce. We observed that the basal area growth models in both decision support systems performed quite well for all mixtures regardless of the proportion of species. Motti simulations overestimated growth in Scots pine-Norway spruce mixtures by 0.063 m2·ha−1·year−1 which may be acceptable for practical use. Therefore, we corroborated that both decision support systems can be currently utilized for short-term forest growth simulation of mixed boreal forests. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Quantitative structure models (QSMs) are topological ordered cylinder models of trees which describe the branching structure up to the tips.
Methods : We present unpublished tree describing parameters which can be derived [rein a single Quantitative Structure Model QSM. The parameters are used to build two Radius correction filters.
Results : For validation we use QSMs produced from an open point cloud data set of tree clouds with the SimpleForest software. We coin-pare the QSM volume against the harvested reference data for 65 felled trees. We also found QSM data of Tree QSM, a competitive and broadly accepted QSM modeling tool. Our RMSE was less than 40 % of the TreeQSM RMSE. For other error measures, the r2adi and the CCC, the relative improvement looked even better with reaching only 27 % and 21 % of the TreeQSM errors respectively.
Conclusions: In forest ecology we should use the here presented pipeline to build accurate CPIs for reasons of: Quality - With the invention of the QSM Radius filter techniques we improve tree volume prediction capabilities utilizing QSMs. Quantity - More data can be collected with QSMs than with traditional methods. Here we use models build on more than ten thousand measurements.Numéro de notice : A2023-178 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF+Ext (2020- ) Thématique : FORET/INFORMATIQUE/MATHEMATIQUE Nature : Article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=103320
