[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Terrestrial light detection and ranging (lidar) is capable of resolving trees at the branch/leaf level with accurate and dense point clouds. The separation of leaf and wood components is a prerequisite for the estimation of branch/leaf-scale biophysical properties and realistic tree model reconstruction. Most existing methods have been tested on trees with similar structures; their robustness for trees of different species and sizes remains relatively unexplored. This study proposed a new graph-based leaf–wood separation (GBS) method for individual trees purely using the xyz -information of the point cloud. The GBS method fully utilized the shortest path-based features, as the shortest path can effectively reflect the structures for trees of different species and sizes. Ten types of tree data—covering tropical, temperate, and boreal species—with heights ranging from 5.4 to 43.7 m, were used to test the method performance. The mean accuracy and kappa coefficient at the point level were 94% and 0.78, respectively, and our method outperformed two other state-of-the-art methods. Through further analysis and testing, the GBS method exhibited a strong ability for detecting small and leaf-surrounded branches, and was also sufficiently robust in terms of data subsampling. Our research further demonstrated the potential of the shortest path-based features in leaf–wood separation. The entire framework was provided for use as an open-source Python package, along with our labeled validation data. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is a highly effective and noninvasive technology for retrieving the structural and biophysical attributes of trees using 3-D high-accuracy and high-density point clouds. The separation of leaf and wood points in TLS data is a prerequisite for the accurate and reliable derivation of these attributes. In this study, a new method is proposed to separate the leaf and wood points of individual trees by combining the TLS radiometric (intensity) and geometric (density) data. The leaf points are separated from the wood ones through three steps. First, the corrected intensity data are used to separate a part of the leaf points preliminarily given the differences in reflectance characteristics. Second, the density data are adopted for the further separation of another part of the leaf points because the density of the remaining leaf points is smaller than that of the wood points. Finally, a connectivity clustering algorithm is conducted to form several clusters with different sizes (points) and the remaining leaf points are separated in accordance with the cluster sizes. Eight different trees are selected to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The averaged overall accuracy and kappa coefficient of the eight trees are approximately 95% and 0.81, respectively. The results suggest that the combination of TLS intensity and density data can perform a superior separation of leaf and wood points in terms of efficiency and accuracy, and the proposed separation method can be accurately and robustly used for various trees with different species, sizes, and structures. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Distinct chemical fingerprints of the wood of Afzelia pachyloba and A. bipindensis demonstrated an effective method for identifying these two commercially important species. Direct analysis in real-time (DART) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) allowed high-throughput examination of chemotypes with vast potential in taxonomic, ecological, and forensic research of wood.
Context : Afzelia is a genus of valuable tropical timber trees. Accurate identification of wood is required for the prevention of illicit timber trade as well as for certification purposes in the forest and wood products industry. For many years, particular interest has been focused on attempts to distinguish the wood of A. bipindensis Harms from A. pachyloba Harms due to substantial differences in the commercial values of these two species.
Aims : We investigated if wood chemical signatures and microscopy could identify the wood of A. bipindensis and A. pachyloba.
Methods : We used two approaches, namely metabolome profiling by direct analysis in real-time (DART) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) and wood microstructure by light microscopy and SEM. In all, we analyzed samples from 89 trees of A. bipindensis, and A. pachyloba.
Results : The two species could not be separated by the IAWA standard microscopic wood features. SEM analysis showed considerable variation in the morphology of vestured pits; however, this variation was not species-specific. In contrast, DART-TOFMS followed by unsupervised statistics (Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components) showed distinct metabolome signatures of the two species.
Conclusion : DART-TOFMS provides a rapid method for wood identification that can be easily applied to small heartwood samples. Time- and cost-effective classification of wood chemotypes by DART-TOFMS can have potential applications in various research questions in forestry, wood science, tree-ecophysiology, and forensics.Numéro de notice : A2021-327 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-01024-1 Date de publication en ligne : 31/03/2021 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-01024-1 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=97488

[Termes IGN] radar pénétrant GPRRésumé : (auteur) This paper is a review of published studies involving the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) on wood structures. It also contains background information to help the reader understand how GPR functions. The use of GPR on wood structures began to grow in popularity at the turn of the millennium. GPR has many characteristics that make it attractive as an inspection tool for wood: it is faster than many acoustic and stress wave techniques; it does not require the use of a couplant; while it can also detect the presence of moisture. Moisture detection is of prime concern, and several researchers have labored to measure internal moisture using GPR. While there have been several laboratory studies involving the use of GPR on wood, its use as an inspection tool on large wood structures has been limited. This review identified knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to improve the efficacy of GPR as a reliable inspection tool of wood structure. Chief among these gaps, is the ability to distinguish the type of internal feature from the GPR output and the ability to identify internal decay.
