[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Rare domestic tree species are increasingly being viewed as promising alternatives and additions to current main tree species in forests facing climate change. For a feasible management of these rare species, it is, however, necessary to know their growth patterns and space requirements. This information has been lacking in management and science up to now. Our study investigated the basic crown allometries of four rare domestic tree species (European hornbeam, European white elm, field maple and wild service tree) and compared them to the more established and assessable European beech and oak (sessile oak and pedunculate oak). For our analysis, we used data from eight temporary research plots located on seven sites across south-eastern Germany, augmented by data from long-term plots. Using quantile regression, we investigated the fundamental relationships between crown projection area and diameter, and height and diameter. Subsequently, we used a mixed-effect model to detect the dependence of crown allometry on different stand variables. We derived maximum stem numbers per hectare for each species at different stand heights, thus providing much-needed practical guidelines for forest managers. In the early stages of stand development, we found that European white elm and field maple can be managed with higher stem numbers than European beech, similar to those of oak. European hornbeam and wild service tree require lower stem numbers, similar to European beech. However, during first or second thinnings, we hypothesise that the rare domestic tree species must be released from competitors, as shade tolerance and competitiveness decrease with age. Furthermore, we argue that thinnings must be performed at a higher frequency in stands with admixed European beech because of the species’ high shade tolerance. When properly managed, rare species can reach target diameters similar to oak and beech. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The decomposition of deadwood plays a very important role in the functioning of the forest ecosystem. The present study was conducted with the objectives to: (1) determine the amount of deadwood respiration depending on species and degree of decomposition; (2) determine the extent of the impact of decomposing wood on the amount of respiration in surrounding soil; (3) find a relationship between the amount of respiration and the chemical fractional composition of soil organic matter. Our research has shown that respiration of decaying wood samples was 2-3 times lower compared to soil, regardless of the type of wood and the degree of wood decomposition. The conducted analyses confirmed the influence of the species of wood and the degree of decomposition on the respiration rate in wood samples. More decomposed wood (4th and 5th degree of decomposition) releases more CO2 compared to less decomposed wood and the highest CO2 emissions were recorded for aspen and alder wood. Better understanding of the mechanisms and factors affecting CO2 emissions in forest ecosystem can help reduce climate change. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. and Quercus robur L. grouped), European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) are three major species of western and central European forests. When conditions are suitable for the three species, silvicultural management often favours oak because of its greater economic interest. Forest managers know that beech and hornbeam are strong competitors for oak during the regeneration phase, but the conditions that influence the relative success of the regeneration of the three species growing in mixture are still poorly characterised. The natural regeneration of the three species 20 years after canopy openings was studied based on 108 study sites established in 2001 in French forests impacted by the windstorms Lothar and Martin in 1999. In spring and summer 2018 and 2019, all saplings over 0.1 m in height were counted, species were identified and diameter at breast height (DBH) was measured for all saplings over 1.30 m. The height of the saplings with the highest and median DBH in each plot was recorded for each species. Mixed models were used to analyse the combined effects of former stand type, distance from the edge of the gap and soil conditions on species presence, sapling abundance, DBH and height. The modelling approach highlighted the preponderant role of the initial seed rain on the presence and sapling density of the three species compared to interspecific competition or distance from the edge. The two latter factors had a secondary effect on sapling DBH and height. Beech and hornbeam saplings were more abundant than oak saplings regardless of soil conditions (on average, 3097, 3063 and 344 saplings ha−1, respectively), suggesting a strong competitive ability of these two species. Oak was present on 22% (43% for hornbeam and 68% for beech) of the studied plots, at a low density but with a height and DBH similar to that of beech or hornbeam. This result highlights the high dissemination capacity of beech and hornbeam, which prevents the establishment of a stand dominated by oak. When seeking to obtain oak-dominated stands in the lowlands of Europe, the abundance of beech and hornbeam can be a limiting factor that could lead to the disappearance of oak from large areas if no silvicultural operations are performed to promote it. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Key message: We modeled 10-year net stand volume growth with four machine learning (ML) methods, i.e., artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), random forests (RF), and nearest neighbor analysis (NN), and with linear regression analysis. Incorporating interactions of multiple variables, the ML methods ANN and SVM predicted nonlinear system behavior and unraveled complex relations with greater accuracy than regression analysis.
Context: Investigating the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of short-term forest dynamics is essential for testing whether the desired goals in forest-ecosystem conservation and restoration are achieved. Inventory data from the Jojadeh section of the Farim Forest located in the uneven-aged, mixed Hyrcanian Forest were used to model and predict 10-year net annual stand volume increment with new machine learning technologies.
Aims: The main objective of this study was to predict net annual stand volume increment as the preeminent factor of forest growth and yield models.
Methods: In the current study, volume increment was modeled from two consecutive inventories in 2003 and 2013 using four machine learning techniques that used physiographic data of the forest as input for model development: (i) artificial neural networks (ANN), (ii) support vector machines (SVM), (iii) random forests (RF), and (iv) nearest neighbor analysis (NN). Results from the various machine learning technologies were compared against results produced with regression analysis.
Results: ANNs and SVMs with a linear kernel function that incorporated field-measurements of terrain slope and aspect as input variables were able to predict plot-level volume increment with a greater accuracy (94%) than regression analysis (87%).
Conclusion: These results provide compelling evidence for the added utility of machine learning technologies for modeling plot-level volume increment in the context of forest dynamics and management.
