[Termes IGN] topographie localeRésumé : (article) In this study, the topoclimates of continental Chile are mapped. The mapping involves the identification of homogeneous zones based on the relationships between the climatic variables that characterize a location and the topography that influences the spatial behavior of these variables. The climatic and topographical zoning of the study area is conducted using a statistical methodology based on a combination of principal component analysis and cluster analysis. The climate, topography, and topoclimatic zoning yield 20, 8, and 96 clusters, respectively. Maximum topoclimatic variability is identified in sectors with mountain ranges and intermediate depression (especially in valley areas), and minimum variability is detected in the coastal sector. Furthermore, only one of the topoclimatic units has an area larger than 50,000 km2, whereas 46.8% of the units have surface areas below 2,000 km2. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Topographic heterogeneity under dry continental climate can create a landscape mosaic called “exposure-related forest-steppe”, characterized by a regular pattern of forest on the north- and steppe on the south-facing slopes. Here we identify the climatic and topographic determinants of this landscape type, using a model of the Altai Mountains in southern Siberia because they (1) contain large areas of forest-steppe together with forested and steppe landscapes, and (2) possess well-preserved natural land-cover. Based on the Landsat land-cover classification and digital elevation model we identified areas containing exposure-related forest-steppe and modeled their climatic and topographic thresholds using regression trees. The models showed that in the Altai exposure-related forest-steppe is most common in topographically heterogeneous areas with May–September precipitation of 226–377 mm and a mean July temperature of 13.8–15.6 °C. Its existence is jointly determined by hilly topography and a climate that is moist enough to support tree growth on north-facing slopes, but insufficiently so to support woodland development on south-facing slopes. This is consistent with the concept of effective topographic heterogeneity, suggesting that topographic heterogeneity on the landscape level is translated into high habitat diversity and species diversity only within a certain range of climatic conditions. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) The aim of the study was to assess the effects of competition at both stand and tree levels on climate tree-growth relationships of 414 Abies alba and 243 Fagus sylvatica trees growing in 2 contrasting ecological conditions (north- and south-facing) under mountainous continental climate (mean altitude: 886 m). Stand level competition was considered through three stand basal area (SBA) modalities (Low: 32 m2/ha, Medium: 41 and High: 49) while tree level competition was assessed through three social statuses (SST, Dominant, Codominant and Suppressed trees). A strong specific response to climate was pointed out with different key periods; growth of Abies being mainly driven by previous and current late summer temperatures, while that of Fagus was controlled by April and June ones. No obvious difference between facing sides was evidenced. Competition at stand level prevailed on competition at tree level. In Low and Medium SBA, trees exhibited similar responses to climate whatever their social statuses. On the opposite, sensitivity to summer drought increased with dominancy in high SBA. Inter-specific differences and consequences for forest management are discussed. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (Auteur) The climate of the United States Northern Great Plains region is highly variable. Modelling of agriculture in this region and similar locations depends on the availability and quality of satellite and ground data for agro-climate variables. We evaluated tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite preparation analysis (TMPA) precipitation, atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) surface air temperature, and AIRS relative air humidity (RH). A significant bias was found within the temperature and RH products and no bias but an insufficient rain event detection skill in the precipitation product (probability of detection 0.3). A linear correction of the temperature product removed the bias as well as lowered the root mean square deviation (RMSD). The bias-corrections for RH led to increased RMSD or worse correlation. For precipitation, the correlation between the satellite product and ground data improved if cumulative precipitation or only precipitation during the growing season was used.
