[Termes IGN] ThaïlandeRésumé : (auteur) The Department of Lands (DOL), Thailand, has adopted the Network-based Real-Time Kinematic (NRTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveying technique using a Virtual Reference Station (VRS) to support cadastral surveys since 2011. Determining accurate coordinates of parcel boundary markers at building corners or near fences and walls is difficult because a GNSS range pole cannot be leveled with a circular bubble. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the receivers equipped with tilt sensors for horizontal and vertical positioning. Two types of tilt sensors used for evaluation were a magnetometer and micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). Conducting the NRTK GNSS surveying tests was based on the pole tilt angles of 0°, 15°, 25°, 35°, and 45° from a plumb line in controlled and obstructed environments. The IMU-based tilt sensor had more advantage of accurately positioning over the MEMS sensor. The results showed that using the IMU, better than 4 cm horizontal positioning accuracy was achievable when the pole was tilted by 15° or less under non-multipath and open-sky conditions. The vertical accuracy was of a few centimeter levels and least sensitive to tilt angles using either type of sensor. However, none of the sensors precisely compensated for pole tilt in strong-multipath and complex environments, causing increased horizontal errors in decimeter levels. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) In the case of tree species delineation with very high spatial resolution (VHR) images, is desirable that each segment corresponds to one individual tree crown (ITC). However, in order to have a segmentation algorithm that generates segments matching to ITCs, its parameters ought to be properly tuned. Aiming to avoid time-consuming trial-and-error procedures associated with this task, some initiatives for the automatic search of segmentation parameters have been developed, such as metaheuristic methods. The objective of this work was to test the automatic tuning of segmentation parameters of three segmentation algorithms for the delineation of ITCs belonging to a native endangered species in a subtropical forest area, comparing this method with the traditional trial-and-error approach. Two datasets (WorldView-2 and an orthoimage) and three segmentation algorithms (multiresolution, mean-shift and graph-based) were tested. For the automatic approach, a hybrid metaheuristic method was applied to accomplish the automatic search of parameters for the segmentation algorithms, while for the trial-and-error, a visual assessment was conducted for each set of parameters tested. Four supervised metrics were used to assess the quality of the segmentation results for the optimization approach and for the final set of parameters chosen in the trial-and-error approach. Results showed that none of the algorithms, datasets or approaches differ too much. The evaluation metrics values were lower, indicating that the reference ITCs polygons matched with the segmentation results. Despite the similar results, the automatic tuning of segmentation parameters proved to be a feasible alternative to reduce the subjectivity and the human effort in the choice of segmentation parameters as compared to the trial-and error approach. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The use of airborne laser scanning (LS) is increasing in forestry. Scanning can be conducted from manned aircrafts or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The scanning data are often used to calculate various attributes for small raster cells. These attributes can be used to segment the forest into homogeneous areas, called segments, micro-stands, or, like in this study, stands. Delineation of stands from raster data is equal to finding the most suitable stand number for each raster cell, which is a combinatorial optimization problem. This study tested the performance of the simulated annealing (SA) metaheuristic in the delineation of stands from grids of UAV-LS attributes. The objective function included three criteria: within-stand variation of the LS attributes, stand area, and stand shape. The purpose was to create delineations that consisted of homogeneous stands with a low number of small stands and a regular and roundish stand shape. The results showed that SA is capable of producing stand delineations that meet these criteria. However, the method tended to produce delineations where the stands often consisted of disconnected parts and the stand borders were jagged. These problems were mitigated by using a mode filter on the grid of stand numbers and giving unique numbers for all disconnected parts of a stand. Three LS attributes were used in the delineation. These attributes described the canopy height, the height of the bottom of the canopy and the variation of echo intensity within 1-m2 raster cells. Besides, a texture variable that described the spatial variation of canopy height in the proximity of a 1-m2 raster cell was found to be a useful variable. Stand delineations where the average stand area was about one hectare explained more than 80% of the variation in canopy height. [Termes IGN] villeRésumé : (Auteur) Identifying urban boundaries involves analysing both the functional and the morphological aspects of urban systems. In this paper, we adopt a purely morphological approach and compare three methods for the morphological delineation of cities. Each method avoids using any predefined quantified threshold (size, distance, built density, etc.) to detect crucial discontinuities in space. The first method identifies Natural Cities by clustering points. The other two are the fractal-based MorphoLim method and the Hierarchical Percolation; both involve transforming the data using a step-by-step dilation process. The three methods are critically compared and illustrated by applications to theoretical urban patterns. We further apply each method to the urban agglomeration of Brussels, the Belgian capital, using different data (building footprints, building centroids and street nodes) and considering two study areas, namely the former province of Brabant and the entire country of Belgium. The results show that it is impossible to draw an unambiguous morphological boundary for an urban agglomeration. Consequently, it is crucial to relate the data used, the size of the study area and the method chosen to the objectives of the delineation. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) Legacy ecoregion maps contain knowledge on relationships between eco-region units and their environmental factors. This study proposes a method to extract knowledge from legacy area-class maps to formulate a set of fuzzy membership functions useful for regionalization. We develop a buffer zone approach to reduce the uncertainty of boundaries between eco-region units on area-class maps. We generate buffer zones with a Euclidean distance perpendicular to the boundaries, then the original eco-region units without buffer zones serve as the basic units to generate the probability density functions (PDF) of environmental variables. Then, we transform the PDFs to fuzzy membership functions for class-zones on the map. We demonstrate the proposed method with a climatic zone map of China. The results showed that the buffer zone approach effectively reduced the uncertainties of boundaries. A buffer distance of 10–15 km was recommended in this study. The climatic zone map generated based on the extracted fuzzy membership functions showed a higher spatial stratification heterogeneity (compared to the original map). Based on the fuzzy membership functions with climate data of 1961–2015, we also prepared an updated climatic zone map. This study demonstrates the prospects of using fuzzy membership functions to delineate area classes for regionalization purpose.
