[Termes IGN] sylvopastoralismeRésumé : (Auteur) Increasing anthropogenic pressure leads to loss of habitat through deforestation and degradation in tropical forests. While deforestation can be monitored relatively easily, forest management practices are often subtle processes, that are difficult to capture with for example satellite monitoring. Conventional measurements are well established and can be useful for management decisions, but it is believed that Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) has a role in quantitative monitoring and continuous improvement of methods. In this study we used a combination of TLS and conventional forest inventory measures to estimate forest structural parameters in four different forest types in a tropical montane cloud forest in Kafa, Ethiopia. Here, the four forest types (intact forest, coffee forest, silvopasture, and plantations) are a result of specific management practices (e.g. clearance of understory in coffee forest), and not different forest communities or tree types. Both conventional and TLS derived parameters confirmed our assumptions that intact forest had the highest biomass, silvopasture had the largest canopy gaps, and plantations had the lowest canopy openness. Contrary to our expectations, coffee forest had higher canopy openness and similar biomass as silvopasture, indicating a significant loss of forest structure. The 3D vegetation structure (PAVD – Plant area vegetation density) was different between the forest types with the highest PAVD in intact forest and plantation canopy. Silvopasture was characterised by a low canopy but high understorey PAVD, indicating regeneration of the vegetation and infrequent fuelwood collection and/or non-intensive grazing. Coffee forest canopy had low PAVD, indicating that many trees had been removed, despite coffee needing canopy shade. These findings may advocate for more tangible criteria such as canopy openness thresholds in sustainable coffee certification schemes. TLS as tool for monitoring forest structure in plots with different forest types shows potential as it can capture the 3D position of the vegetation volume and open spaces at all heights in the forest. To quantify changes in different forest types, consistent monitoring of 3D structure is needed and here TLS is an add-on or an alternative to conventional forest structure monitoring. However, for the tropics, TLS-based automated segmentation of trees to derive DBH and biomass is not widely operational yet, nor is species richness determination in forest monitoring. Integration of data sources is needed to fully understand forest structural diversity and implications of forest management practices on different forest types. [Termes IGN] trace numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) The paper discusses the need of a high-level query language to allow analysts, geographers and, in general, non-programmers to easily cross-analyze multi-source VGI created by means of apps, crowd-sourced data from social networks and authoritative geo-referenced data, usually represented as JSON data sets (nowadays, the de facto standard for data exported by social networks). Since an easy to use high-level language for querying and manipulating collections of possibly geo-tagged JSON objects is still unavailable, we propose a truly declarative language, named J-CO-QL, that is based on a well-defined execution model. A plug-in for a GIS permits to visualize geo-tagged data sets stored in a NoSQL database such as MongoDB; furthermore, the same plug-in can be used to write and execute J-CO-QL queries on those databases. The paper introduces the language by exemplifying its operators within a real study case, the aim of which is to understand the mobility of people in the neighborhood of Bergamo city. Cross-analysis of data about transportation networks and VGI from travelers is performed, by means of J-CO-QL language, capable to manipulate and transform, combine and join possibly geo-tagged JSON objects, in order to produce new possibly geo-tagged JSON objects satisfying users’ needs. Most works in deep learning have achieved a great success on regular input representations, but they are hard to be directly applied to classify point clouds due to the irregularity and inhomogeneity of the data. In this paper, a deep neural network with spatial pooling (DNNSP) is proposed to classify large-scale point clouds without rasterization. The DNNSP first obtains the point-based feature descriptors of all points in each point cluster. The distance minimum spanning tree-based pooling is then applied in the point feature representation to describe the spatial information among the points in the point clusters. The max pooling is next employed to aggregate the point-based features into the cluster-based features. To assure the DNNSP is invariant to the point permutation and sizes of the point clusters, the point-based feature representation is determined by the multilayer perception (MLP) and the weight sharing for each point is retained, which means that the weight of each point in the same layer is the same. In this way, the DNNSP can learn the features of points scaled from the entire regions to the centers of the point clusters, which makes the point cluster-based feature representations robust and discriminative. Finally, the cluster-based features are input to another MLP for point cloud classification. We have evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively the proposed method using several airborne laser scanning and terrestrial laser scanning point cloud data sets. The experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of our method in improving classification accuracy. From these multiple sources, numerous data could be extracted: set of images, 3D model, coloured points cloud ... When classical localization devices failed (e.g. GPS sensor in cluttered environments), aforementioned data could be used within a localization framework. This is called Visual Based Localization (VBL). Due to numerous data types that can be collected from a scene, VBL encompasses a large amount of different methods. This paper presents a survey about recent methods that localize a visual acquisition system according to a known environment. We start by categorizing VBL methods into two distinct families: indirect and direct localization systems. As the localization environment is almost always dynamic, we pay special attention to methods designed to handle appearances changes occurring in a scene. Thereafter, we highlight methods exploiting heterogeneous types of data. Finally, we conclude the paper with a discussion on promising trends that could permit to a localization system to reach high precision pose estimation within an area as large as possible.
