[Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (auteur) People’s attitudes towards hydraulic fracturing (fracking) can be shaped by socio-demographics, economic development, social equity and politics, environmental impacts, and fracking-related information. Existing research typically conducts surveys and interviews to study public attitudes towards fracking among a small group of individuals in a specific geographic area, where limited samples may introduce bias. Here, we compiled geo-referenced social media big data from Twitter during 2018–2019 for the entire United States to present a more holistic picture of people’s attitudes towards fracking. We used a multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) to investigate county-level relationships between the aforementioned factors and percentages of negative tweets concerning fracking. Results indicate spatial heterogeneity and varying scales of those associations. Counties with higher median household income, larger African American populations, and/or lower educational level are less likely to oppose fracking, and these associations show global stationarity in all contiguous US counties. Eastern and Central US counties with higher unemployment rates, counties east of the Great Plains with less fracking sites nearby, and Western and Gulf Coast region counties with higher health insurance enrolments are more likely to oppose fracking activities. These three variables show clear East-West geographical divides in influencing public perspective on fracking. In counties across the southern Great Plains, negative attitudes towards fracking are less often vocalized on Twitter as the share of Republican voters increases. These findings have implications for both predicting public perspectives and needed policy adjustments. The methodology can also be conveniently applied to investigate public perspectives on other controversial topics. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Fifteen species are most susceptible to require vegetation control during tree regeneration in the range of our study. Among these 15 species, Rubus fruticosus, Pteridium aquilinum, and Molinia caerulea cover each more than 300,000 ha of open-canopy forests.
Context: Vegetation control, i.e., the reduction of competitive species cover, is often required to promote tree seedling establishment during the forest regeneration stage. The necessity to control understory vegetation largely depends on the species to be controlled. In order to plan forest renewal operations, it is critical to identify which species require vegetation control during the regeneration stage and to quantify the forest area affected by these species.
Aims: We aimed at identifying the main species requiring vegetation control and at estimating the forest area they cover at the national level.
Methods: Using National Forest Inventory data, we created four indicators based on two levels of plant cover, cross-referenced with two levels of canopy opening, and compared them to the outcome of a survey of forest manager practices.
Results: The best indicator was the one that represented the proportion of forests with open canopy where the species was present with a large cover in the understory. In non-Mediterranean France, according to the indicator, a total of 15 species were found to frequently require vegetation control during the tree regeneration stage. Pteridium aquilinum, Molinia caerulea, and Rubus fruticosus were the main species, and each covered more than 300,000 ha of forest with open canopies, representing about 13% of the total forest area with open canopies outside of the Mediterranean area.
Conclusions: Forests covered by species requiring vegetation control according to forest managers represent a large share of the forest area undergoing regeneration. In national forest inventories (NFI), complete or partial nonresponse usually results from hazardous conditions or lack of plot access permission. While many factors may be related to nonresponse, the two primary factors in the NFI of the USA are public/private land ownership and office/field plot status. To ameliorate potential nonresponse bias, these factors should be accounted for in the estimation process. An estimation method is presented where response homogeneity groups (RHGs) account for differential nonresponse rates between forest/nonforest plots. In a post-stratified estimation context, ratio-to-size estimators are used in RHGs within post-strata to avoid potential bias in variance estimates arising from partial plot nonresponse. Combining RHGs within post-strata requires a complex variance estimator that includes four sources of uncertainty. Testing of the estimation method on a synthetic population showed the approach is essentially unbiased. Application to NFI data from 10 states in the USA consistently showed the RHG method produced state-level estimates of forestland area that were 0.1%–3.6% larger than the current post-stratified estimation procedure. It is suggested that these differences are indicative of the nonresponse bias present when plots having differential nonresponse rates are not accounted for. This task is encountered every day, sometimes incorrect reading of traffic signs can lead to very serious results. In particular, the Arabic language is very difficult, making recognizing and viewing Arabic text a difficult task. In this context, we are looking for an effective solution to remove errors and results that can sometimes end someone's life. This article aims to correctly read traffic signs with Arabic text using augmented reality technology. Our system is composed of three modules. The first is text detection and recognition. The second is Text visualization. The third is Text to speech methods conversion. With this system, the user can have two different results. The first result is visual with much-improved text and enhancement. The second result is sound, he can hear the text aloud. This system is very applicable and effective for daily life. To assess the effectiveness of our work, we offer a survey to a group of visually impaired people to give their opinion on the use of our application. The results have been good for most people. The large variety of representations that we have observed leads to problems of transfer and variations in analysis. In this article, we propose a representation, Regular Dot map (RD), and we compare it to 4 others routinely used to visualise post-disaster damage. Our comparison is based on a user study in which a set of participants carried out various tasks on multiple datasets using the various visualisations. We then analysed the behaviour during the experiment using three approaches: (1) quantitative analysis of user answers according to the reality on the ground, (2) quantitative analysis of user preferences in terms of perceived effectiveness and appearance, and (3) qualitative analysis of the data collected using an eye tracker. The results of this study lead us to believe that RD is the best compromise in terms of effectiveness among the various representations studied.
