Especially for visualization purposes, these models are needed at several levels of detail (LOD) in fine granular steps that also allow for a smooth transformation from one level to the next to avoid pop-up artifacts. Several methods have been proposed for the automatic generalization of 3D building models that simplify the geometry of given boundary-based models at discrete LODs. In this paper, we present an approach to generate a transformation sequence between two discrete LODs with the purpose to later build a continuous LOD sequence. The method is based on mesh simplification techniques that are extended to a restricted use of edge collapse and vertex move operations applied on triangle meshes augmented by additional breaking lines. The validity of the approach is demonstrated on a case study that is close to reality. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) The development of tools for the generation of 3D city models started almost two decades ago. From the beginning, fully automatic reconstruction systems were envisioned to fulfill the need for efficient data collection. However, research on automatic city modelling is still a very active area. The paper will review a number of current approaches in order to comprehensively elaborate the state of the art of reconstruction methods and their respective principles. Originally, automatic city modelling only aimed at polyhedral building objects, which mainly reflects the respective roof shapes and building footprints. For this purpose, airborne images or laser scans are used. In addition to these developments, the paper will also review current approaches for the generation of more detailed facade geometries from terrestrial data collection. [Termes IGN] villeRésumé : (Auteur) The reconstruction of 3D city models has matured in recent years from a research topic and niche market to commercial products and services. When constructing models on a large scale, it is inevitable to have reconstruction tools available that offer a high level of automation and reliably produce valid models within the required accuracy. In this paper, we present a 3D building reconstruction approach, which produces LOD2 models from existing ground plans and airborne LIDAR data. As well-formed roof structures are of high priority to us, we developed an approach that constructs models by assembling building blocks from a library of parameterized standard shapes. The basis of our work is a 2D partitioning algorithm that splits a building's footprint into nonintersecting, mostly quadrangular sections. A particular challenge thereby is to generate a partitioning of the footprint that approximates the general shape of the outline with as few pieces as possible. Once at hand, each piece is given a roof shape that best fits the LIDAR points in its area and integrates well with the neighbouring pieces. An implementation of the approach is used now for quite some time in a production environment and many commercial projects have been successfully completed. The second part of this-paper reflects the experiences that we have made with this approach working on the 3D reconstruction of the entire cities of East Berlin and Cologne. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The paper presents an automatic approach for the generalisation of 3D building models with regard to the visualisation of urban landscapes. Simplified versions of such models are not only needed for level of detail structures in real-time rendering, but also for web-based 3D GIS and for the presentation on mobile computing devices. To yield more sophisticated building models compared to already known surface simplification algorithms from the field of computer vision, the presented solution is based on least squares adjustment theory combined with an elaborate set of surface classification and simplification operations. This concept allows for the integration of surface regularities into the building models which are important for visual impression. These regularities are stringently preserved over the course of the generalisation process.
