Beirut city, Lebanon, was one of the unfortunate regions to endure the horrific ordeal of an unexpected explosion that caused thousands of human casualties, billions of dollars’ worth of property damage, and destroyed its main maritime entry point. In this paper, we identify damaged regions and classify their severity using a simple and robust SAR correlation technique. We employ phase coherence and amplitude correlation of a SAR stack to estimate pixels’ damage probability using hypothesis testing. We use a spatial phase filter applied in the frequency domain to improve the estimated coherence by removing the spatial decorrelation component of the total estimated coherence. Using this filter improved the coherence of nearly 44.2% of pixels identified with coherence less than 0.25 in our study area. The estimated damaged regions are presented and compared against a damage map issued by Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) which shows an average agreement of 68.3%. Also, a fine agreement was observed when compared to optical satellite images. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) The objective was to quantify the influence of thinning, high pruning and slash management on crop tree and stand growth in young even-aged stands of planted silver birch (Betula pendula Roth). This study was based on two field experiments, aged six and eleven years at initiation and re-measured after six and eight years, respectively. Treatments included the unthinned control, moderate thinning mainly from below (removing 28–33% of standing volume), point thinning to favor 300 trees per ha and with no thinning elsewhere in the plot (removing 16–25%), and heavy thinning leaving 600 evenly distributed potential future crop trees per ha (removing 64–75%). Slash management (extraction or retention) was applied to heavily thinned plots. High pruning removing 30–70% of the green crown was carried out in some plots with point or heavy thinning on 300 or 600 trees per ha, respectively. Stand volume growth increased with increasing pre-treatment mean annual volume increment and decreased with increasing thinning intensity as compared to the unthinned control. LS-means estimates indicated a reduction for moderate thinning by 14%, for point thinning by 12% and for heavy thinning (combined with pruning) by 62%. However, in the youngest experiment, heavy thinning (without pruning) reduced growth by 54%. Combining these results with results from a similar experiment in Canada, the reduction in stand volume growth (RedIv%) depending on thinning removal (RemV%), both expressed as a percentage of the unthinned control, was quantified as RedIv% = −23.67 + 1.16·RemV% (calibration range: 30–83%). For heavy thinning (large quantities of slash), slash extraction resulted in no reduction in stand volume growth as compared to slash retention. The instantaneous numeric reduction in the average stem diameter of the 300 thickest trees per ha (D300) due to thinning was 3.5, 15–21% and 955–11% with moderate, point and heavy thinning, respectively. The subsequent average annual increase in D300 during the observation period was 8.5%, 25 and 18%, respectively. In the youngest experiment, pruning in unthinned plots led to a reduction in the annual increase of D300 by 14%, and heavy thinning in unpruned plots led to an increase by 30%. The growth of pre-selected potential future crop trees increased with increasing thinning intensity. In heavily thinned plots, pruning reduced growth increasingly with increasing pruning severity; LS-means estimates indicated 21% larger growth on stem diameter for unpruned trees and 3% for pruned trees. As an adverse side effect, heavily thinned plots with only 600 trees per ha were at increased risk of windthrow for some years after the thinning intervention. In the oldest experiment, 95–21% of the trees in these plots were damaged by wind. [Termes IGN] projet routierRésumé : (auteur) Spatial impacts of highway projects on biodiversity of North-Eastern Himalaya remains largely unexplored. Usually a number of ecological criteria are required in biodiversity impact assessment. However, a wide set of such criteria can be overwhelming for the decision-makers to assess the viability of such projects. SBIAM uses landscape metrics and experts’ opinion to create a single composite biodiversity value map. The weighted area loss under various project alternatives estimated from Biodiversity Value Map is compared to identify the most viable alternative. SBIAM uses AHP and curve fitting method in the biodiversity estimation. The study indicates that the highway broadening project in the study area will cause a moderate biodiversity loss. Sensitivity analysis of SBIAM indicates its robustness, and shows that forest patches near the highway are most sensitive to disturbances and patch proximity. SBIAM can be applied in varied spatial scales, terrains and development projects as a decision support tool. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) plays an important role in moderating the Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) effect, which poses threats to human health due to substantially increased temperatures relative to rural areas. UTC coverage is associated with reduced urban temperatures, and therefore benefits both human health and reducing energy use in cities. Measurement of this relationship relies on accurate, fine spatial resolution UTC mapping, and on time series analysis of Land Surface Temperatures (LST). The City of Worcester, Massachusetts underwent extensive UTC loss and gain during the relatively brief period from 2008 to 2015, providing a natural experiment to measure the UTC/LST relationship. This paper consists of two elements to this end. First, it presents methods to map UTC in urban and suburban locations at fine spatial resolution (∼0.5 m) using image segmentation of a fused Lidar/WorldView-2 dataset, in order to show UTC change over time. Second, the areas of UTC change are used to explore changes in LST magnitude and seasonal variability using a time series of all available Landsat data for the study area over the eight-year period from 2007 to 2015. Fractional UTC change per unit area was determined using fine resolution UTC maps for 2008, 2010, and 2015, covering the period of large-scale tree loss and subsequent planting. LST changes were measured across a series of net UTC change bins, providing a relationship between UTC net change and LST trend. LST was analyzed for both monotonic trends over time and changes to seasonal magnitude and timing, using Theil-Sen slopes and Seasonal Trend Analysis (STA), respectively. The largest magnitudes of UTC loss occurred in residential neighborhoods, causing increased exposure of impervious (road) and pervious (grass) surfaces. Net UTC loss showed higher monotonic increases in LST than persistence and gain areas. STA indicated that net UTC loss was associated greater difference between 2008 and 2015 seasonal temperature curves than persistence areas, and also larger peak LST values, with peak increases ranging from 1 to 6 °C. Timing of summer warm period was extended in UTC loss areas by up to 15 days. UTC gain provided moderate LST mitigation, with lower monotonic trends, lower peak temperatures, and smaller seasonal curve changes than both persistence and loss locations. This study shows that urban trees mitigate the magnitude and timing of the surface urban heat island effect, even in suburban areas with less proportional impervious coverage than the dense urban areas traditionally associated with SUHI. Trees can therefore be seen as an effective means of offsetting the energy-intensive urban heat island effect. Pour cela il convient d’opérer de nombreuses étapes allant du levé terrain du bâti déjà existant, à l’analyse de la lumière reçue par les bâtiments avoisinants avec et sans le projet proposé par l’architecte. J’ai alors utilisé, durant mon stage, de nombreux outils informatiques tels que le logiciel AutoCAD, UNDET, ainsi que les plug-ins de la société MBS Survey Software Ltd permettant de tester la modélisation. Cette étude permet de mesurer la quantité de lumière que va faire perdre le nouveau projet de construction aux propriétés avoisinantes. À travers différents tests, Vertical Sky Component (VSC), Daylight Distribution / No sky Line (DD) ou encore Average Daylight Factor (ADF) il sera possible d’apporter une réponse sur la faisabilité d’une telle construction. Ce travail représente donc un important outil d’aide à la décision pour les personnes en charge du projet de développement. Enfin, le rendu final au client est sous forme de PDF 3D représentant chaque pièce et fenêtre testées en vert si le résultat du test respecte les critères établis par le guide Building Research Establishment (BRE), ou en rouge dans le cas contraire.
