[Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) In current navigation systems quantitative metrics such as distance, time and energy are used to determine optimal paths. Yet, a “best path”, as judged by users, might take qualitative features into account, for instance the scenery or the touristic attractiveness of a path. Machines are unable to quantify such “soft” properties. Crowdsourced data provides us with a means to record user choices and opinions. In this work, we survey heterogeneous sources of spatial, spatio-temporal and textual crowdsourced data as a proxy for qualitative information of users in movement. We (i) explore the process of extracting qualitative information from uncertain crowdsourced data sets employing different techniques, (ii) investigate the enrichment of road networks with the extracted information by adjusting its properties and by building a meta-network, and (iii) show how to use the enriched networks for routing purposes. An extensive experimental evaluation of our proposed methods on real-world data sets shows that qualitative properties as captured by crowdsourced data can indeed be used to improve the quality of routing suggestions while not sacrificing their quantitative aspects. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Mobile social media represented by Twitter are expected to be a suitable source of data for analyzing human behaviour and statuses of locations. It seems that we can provide location-based information simply by spatially filtering archived data. However, there are several problems in terms of practical use. This research considers in particular problems that concern the relationship between data meaning and their spatial structures. With regard to Twitter, in general, the location from which a tweet is posted is attached to a geotagged tweet. For example, the location coordinates attached to the geotagged tweet “Heavy rain in Miura Peninsula” by NHK (Japan's public broadcaster) are not those of the Miura Peninsula, but of Shibuya in Tokyo (where NHK is located). Therefore, the tweet is not found by a spatial search around the Miura Peninsula or even Kanagawa Prefecture (where the Miura Peninsula is located). To resolve such problems, we propose a framework that distinguishes locations of interest and locations of activity. We propose a method for automatically classifying such locations and develop a data collection, classification, and visualization system based on this method. [Termes IGN] modèle dynamiqueRésumé : (auteur) The concept of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has progressed from being an exotic prospect to making a profound impact on GIScience and geography in general, as initially anticipated. However, while massive and manifold data is continuously produced voluntarily and applications are built for information and knowledge extraction, the initially introduced concept of VGI lacks certain methodological perspectives in this regard which have not been fully elaborated. In this article we highlight and discuss an important gap in this concept, i.e. the lack of formal acknowledgment of temporal aspects. By coining the proposed advanced framework ‘Volunteered Geo-Dynamic Information’ (VGDI), we attempt to lay the ground for full conceptual and applied spatio-temporal integration. To illustrate that integrative approach of VGDI and its benefits, we describe the potential impact on the field of dynamic population distribution modeling. While traditional approaches in that domain rely on survey-based data and statistics as well as static geographic information, the use of VGDI enables a dynamic setup. Foursquare venue and user check-in data are presented for a test site in Lisbon, Portugal. Two core modules of spatio-temporal population assessment are thereby addressed, namely time use profiling and target zone characterization, motivated by the potential integration in existing population dynamics frameworks such as the DynaPop model.
