[Termes IGN] Terre (planète)Résumé : (auteur) Signal propagation through-the-Earth (TTE) is of great importance to geophysicists searching for underground resources such as oil and gas, homeland defense searching for tunnels and underground structures, and mining operations. The Earth is a conductive medium, unlike air or space, which tends to “short-out” electromagnetic fields traditionally used for wireless communications. The magnitude of this effect depends on many factors, such as frequency and the type of Earth-material. Mathematical models of energy propagation have been developed to help us understand the signal propagation issues, and some models can be used to predict the performance of the specific electromagnetic energies being used. There are numerous ways of modeling the Earth to study energy propagation. Some early literature presented models of signal propagation through a homogeneous Earth. These were fairly accurate for signals traveling from one point in the Earth to another point. However, signals traveling from below the ground to the surface of the Earth encounter many different layers of the Earth. This realization led to the development of models of a layered Earth. A novel layered-Earth communication model is presented and evaluated as to its accuracy by using measured data gathered during TTE communication tests from 2007 to 2012. Evaluations show that the new layered-EARTH model provides improved accuracy for the prediction of signal propagation performance from within a subterranean space, such as a mine, to and from the surface of the Earth. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser sur la LuneRésumé : (auteur) Only a few sites on Earth are technically equipped to carry out Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) to retroreflector arrays on the surface of the Moon. Despite the weak signal, they have successfully provided LLR range data for about 49 years, generating about 26,000 normal points. Recent system upgrades and new observatories have made millimeter-level range accuracy achievable. Based on appropriate modeling and sophisticated data analysis, LLR is able to determine many parameters associated with Earth–Moon dynamics, involving the lunar ephemeris, lunar physics, the Moon’s interior, reference frames and Earth orientation parameters. LLR has also become one of the strongest tools for testing Einstein’s theory of general relativity in the solar system. By extending the standard solution, it is possible to solve for parameters related to gravitational physics, like the temporal variation of the gravitational constant, metric parameters as well as the strong equivalence principle, preferred-frame effects and standard-model extensions. This paper provides a review about LLR measurement and analysis. After a short historical overview, we describe the key findings of LLR, the apparatus and technologies involved, the requisite modeling techniques, some recent results and future prospects on all fronts. We expect continued improvements in LLR, maintaining its lead in contributing to science. [Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (éditeur) The advance in space machineries has created a novel technology for observing and monitoring the Earth from space. Most earth observation remote sensing considerations focus on using conventional image processing algorithms or classic edge detection tools. Nevertheless, these techniques do not implement modern physics, applied mathematics, signal communication, remote sensing data, and innovative space technologies. This book provides readers with methods to comprehend how to monitor coastal environments, disaster areas, and infrastructure from space with advanced talent remote sensing technology to bridge the gaps between modern space technology, image processing algorithms, mathematical models and the critical issue of the coastal and infrastructure investigations. [Termes IGN] projection orthogonaleRésumé : (Auteur) The simplex growing algorithm (SGA) has been widely used for finding endmembers. It can be considered as a sequential version of the well-known endmember finding algorithm, N-finder algorithm (N-FINDR), which finds endmembers one at a time by growing simplexes. However, one of the major hurdles for N-FINDR and SGA is the calculation of simplex volume (SV) which poses a great challenge in designing any algorithm using SV as a criterion for finding endmembers. This paper develops an orthogonal projection (OP)-based SGA (OP-SGA) which essentially resolves this computational issue. It converts the issue of calculating SV to calculating the OP on previously found simplexes without computing matrix determinants. Most importantly, a recursive Kalman filter-like OP-SGA, to be called recursive OP-SGA (ROP-SGA), can be also derived to ease computation. By virtue of ROP-SGA, several advantages and benefits in computational savings and hardware implementation can be gained for which N-FINDR and SGA do not have.
