Several approaches and methodologies have been adopted to obtain high-resolution population distribution grids. The use of addresses data to obtain gridded population distribution maps emerges as one of the more recent and accurate approaches. The increasing dissemination and availability of geo-data and more specifically address data allow us to obtain updated, granular and high spatial resolution population distribution maps. This paper describes a bottom-up open addresses data mapping-based approach of gridded population distribution with a fine spatial resolution. Through a QGIS plugin, an adaptation of the housing unit methodology was implemented to obtain 500 m × 500 and 250 m × 250 m population grids for mainland Portugal. The results showed that the use of reliable addresses databases can generate gridded population distribution maps with a high degree of adjustment to reality. [Termes IGN] variation diurneRésumé : (auteur) A high-precision real-time troposphere model is constructed by combining ground-based GNSS observation data and the latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis (ERA5). First, the zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) is extracted in real time with high accuracy by combining the data of more than 500 GNSS stations in the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC) and national reference station network (NRSN); second, a grid model of the elevation normalization model (ENM) in China using ERA5 data is constructed, which takes into account the annual, semiannual and daily cycles. The ZTD estimated by GNSS stations at different heights based on precise point positioning (PPP) is normalized to a uniform height based on ENM; in addition, the optimal smoothing factors of the Gauss distance weighting function in different seasons are determined based on ERA5, which contributes to improved accuracy of ZTD interpolated from GNSS-derived ZTD to ZTD at grid points; finally, a real-time 1° × 1°ZTD grid model of China is created; the broadcast interval is extended to 6 min from few seconds. The new ZTD model has been evaluated using the data of 15 GNSS stations in China in 2020. The test results show that the new ZTD model deviates from the reference value with a mean value better than − 0.09 cm and RMSE, better than 1.44 cm compared with the ZTD estimated by post-processing GNSS, while the mean value of the deviation is -0.13 cm, and the RMSE is approximately 3.11 cm compared with radiosonde-derived ZTD. The new ZTD grid model can be used to enhance GNSS/PPP. Two weeks of GNSS observations, one week in winter and another in summer, were randomly collected for PPP processing. The statistical results show the convergence time in the vertical directions is shortened by 37.4% and 38.6% at the 95% and 68% confidence levels after ZTD constraints are applied to the float PPP solution, respectively. Letter and number grid Woesten references (e.g. X: 28.A.6.b.73) cannot be used by modern GPS navigation devices that require geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) or current map grid coordinates. This paper provides the background behind this project and demonstrates a method of transforming WW1 grid references to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid coordinates using Google Maps to obtain geographical coordinates, Geographic to UTM grid conversion and a 2D Conformal transformation. As well, it provides a ‘snapshot’ of practical methods that were used to develop a software package that would allow amateur military historians to convert the WW1 Grid Reference System to contemporary coordinates. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (auteur) Terrain derivative calculations from triangulated irregular network (TIN)-based digital elevation models (DEMs) have been extensively explored in geomorphometry. However, most calculation methods focus on the triangulation facets of TIN-based DEMs and ignore the vertices. In fact, these vertices are the original sampling points from the terrain surface and serve as the basis for triangulation. In this study, we argue that terrain derivative calculations using TIN-based DEMs should focus on the vertices. Employing examples with slope and aspect, we applied the TIN vertex-based method to a mathematical surface and a real topography using TIN-based DEMs with a range of sampling point densities. We performed a comparative analysis of the TIN vertex-based, TIN facet-based, and grid-based methods. Assessments on the mathematical surface showed that the TIN vertex-based method achieved the highest accuracy among the three methods. Error analysis for the real landform case indicated that the TIN vertex-based method performed slightly better than the grid-based method for slope calculation and slightly worse than the grid-based method for aspect calculation. Among the three methods, the TIN facet-based method was most sensitive to error. The TIN vertex-based method can provide a reference for the slope and aspect calculation based on point clouds.
