[Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (auteur) As an important land surface vegetation parameter, fractional vegetation cover (FVC) has been widely used in many Earth system ecological and climate models. In particular, high-quality and reliable FVC products on the global scale are important for the Earth surface process simulation and global change studies. Recently, the FengYun-3 (FY-3) series satellites, which are the second generation of Chinese meteorological satellites, launched with the polar orbit and provide continuous land surface observations on a global scale. However, there is rare studying on the FVC estimation using FY-3 reflectance data. Therefore, the FY-3B reflectance data were selected as the representative data to develop a FVC estimation algorithm in this study, which would investigate the capability of the FY-3 reflectance data on the global FVC estimation. The spatial–temporal validation over the regional area indicated that the FVC estimations generated by the proposed algorithm had reliable continuities. Furthermore, a satisfactory accuracy performance (R2 = 0.7336, RMSE = 0.1288) was achieved for the proposed algorithm based on the Earth Observation LABoratory (EOLAB) reference FVC data, which provided further evidence on the reliability and robustness of the proposed algorithm. All these results indicated that the FY-3 reflectance data were capable of generating a FVC estimation with reliable spatial–temporal continuities and accuracy. [Termes IGN] régression linéaireRésumé : (Auteur) The first products of the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) include bias monitoring and calibration corrections for the thermal infrared (IR) channels of current meteorological sensors on geostationary satellites. These use the hyperspectral Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on the low Earth orbit (LEO) Metop satellite as a common cross-calibration reference. This paper describes the algorithm, which uses a weighted linear regression, to compare collocated radiances observed from each pair of geostationary-LEO instruments. The regression coefficients define the GSICS Correction, and their uncertainties provide quality indicators, ensuring traceability to the selected community reference, IASI. Examples are given for the Meteosat, GOES, MTSAT, Fengyun-2, and COMS imagers. Some channels of these instruments show biases that vary with time due to variations in the thermal environment, stray light, and optical contamination. These results demonstrate how inter-calibration can be a powerful tool to monitor and correct biases, and help diagnose their root causes. [Termes IGN] rayonnement terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) The Earth Radiation Measurement (ERM) instrument onboard FengYun (FY)-3B satellite observes the Earth's atmosphere through a narrow scanning field of view (NFOV) and a wide nonscanning FOV. For each field of view, the measurements are made from two broadband channels: a total waveband channel covering 0.2-50 um and a shortwave (SW) band covering 0.2-4.3 um. The validation to the ERM calibration was carried out by comparing the unfiltered longwave (LW) and SW radiances from ERM with those from Clouds and Earth's Radiation Energy System (CERES) flight model 3 onboard Earth Observing System Aqua satellite. While the ERM LW and SW radiances have a good correlation with CERES data, there is a systemic bias between the two data sets. A spectral correction is made for the ERM data using the CERES data. After the correction, the error of the ERM LW radiance is reduced from -3.00 to -0.60 W/sr · m2. For the SW radiance, the bias is reduced from 6.00 to 4.00 W/sr · m2. Based on the ERM in-orbit calibration data, the stability of the ERM LW radiometric response is analyzed, and it is shown that the gains are stable with a variation of less than 1.5% during its first 9 months in orbit. However, the gains at the SW channels have larger changes and exceed 3%. These drifts might be caused by the detector degradation. Also, the NFOV scanner at the SW channel is no longer working after its 8 months in orbit.
