[Termes IGN] prise en compte du contexteRésumé : (Auteur) Recently Laser-Scan has been involved in a major generalisation project to improve business efficiencies at several state mapping agencies in Germany. What is the current status of generalisation ? How much can be done automated ? How emcompassing are the algorithms nowadays ? Dieter Neuffer, generalisation Product Manager from Laser-Scan, gives the answers. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Generalisation is the task of deriving small scale or geodata products from more detailed existing mapping or source data (covering a smaller area sheet). It involves exaggerating thse aspects that are important for a particular purpose and scale, and removing unwanted detail that would otherwise clutter the map and confuse the user. Generalisation allows a series of such products to be produced from a single data source. The task, performed manually, once constituted much of the work of the traditional cartographer, being slow, tedious and error-prone. In the digital age, however, more efficient methods are possible and automating 70 per cent of the generalisation process offers huge cost-saving.
