[Termes IGN] photographie aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) TerraSAR-X (TSX) has led to a new era for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, offering high-resolution (1 m) data that was not previously available from space. The TSX X-band sensor can be operated in three interferometrically compatible imaging modes: Stripmap (SM), high-resolution Spotlight (HS) and ScanSAR. Due to the low resolution of ScanSAR (16 to 30 m), SM and HS images are preferred for resolution-based applications. This paper attempts to validate and compare the digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from TSX SM and HS image pairs. Digital surface models (DSMs) were generated by interferometry in a part of Istanbul with a variety of ground types. These DSMs were converted to DEMs by filtering and then compared with a reference DEM produced from aerial photographs. The quality assessment was performed using advanced analyses concerned with accuracy and morphologic detail. The results of both absolute and relative accuracy analyses clearly reveal that the quality of the TSX HS DEM is better than SM and very consistent with the reference model. [Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) The availability of very high resolution (VHR) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, which can be acquired by satellites over the same geographical area with short repetition interval, makes the development of effective unsupervised change detection (CD) techniques very important. This paper proposes a hierarchical approach to CD in VHR SAR images for addressing surveillance applications, where VHR data are acquired with high temporal resolution (e.g., one image every few days). The proposed approach is based on two concepts: 1) exploitation of a multiscale technique for a preliminary detection of areas containing changes in backscattering at different scales (hot spots) and 2) explicit modeling of the semantic meaning of changes by using both the intrinsic SAR image properties (e.g., acquisition geometry and scattering mechanisms) and the available prior information. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a problem of freight traffic surveillance is addressed considering two data sets. Each of them is made up of a pair of multitemporal VHR SAR images acquired by the COSMO-SkyMed (COnstellation of small Satellites for the Mediterranean basin Observation) constellation in spotlight mode. Each data set defines a complex CD problem due to both the presence of a variety of changes on the ground and the complexity of object backscattering. Experimental results point out the effectiveness of the proposed approach. [Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The TerraSAR-X mission was launched in June 2007. After successful completion of the commissioning phase, the mission entered its operational phase in January 2008. Since that time, TerraSAR-X provides the scientific remote sensing community and commercial customers with high-quality spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data products. The intention of this paper is to present the SAR data processing concept and the comprehensive portfolio of products reflecting the instrument's diverse imaging capabilities together with options of processing and achieved product quality as well as the essentials of SAR processing. Furthermore, it shall also provide details on how to fully exploit the precision of the TerraSAR-X products.
