[Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) In the history of surveying and mapping, a Iarge volumes of topographic maps and digital elevation models have been created at various scales throughout the world. However, positional errors and geometric distortions may exist in the topographic contour maps and their derived DEMs due to inaccurate ground control and poor navigation techniques in the early years. In this paper, we present a new technique to detect and correct positional errors and geometric distortions in topographic data based on rigorous Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image simulation and mathematical modeling of SAR imaging geometry. Our method has been successfully applied to two USGS topographical data sets in Antarctica. Using Radarsat SAR imagery, positional errors of these two data sets have been reduced from 5 km to 200 m and from 200 m to 50 m, respectively. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) It is investigated whether a GIS-based distributed model developed for rockfall assessment at slope scale, which uses data with a support of 2.5 x 2.5 m, could be used for rockfall assessment at the regional scale, using input data with a support of 25 x 25 m and of poorer quality. It was anticipated that in the latter case the model error would increase. Three types of simulations were applied to the same model and the outcomes were validated with field data. The first simulation used input data with a support of 2.5 x 2.5 m and aggregated the output to a support of 25 x 25 m. The second simulation used the same input data as in the first simulation, but these data were aggregated to a support of 25 x 25 m before running the model. The third simulation used input data of poorer quality obtained at a support of 25 x 25 m. The results show that simulating the maximum extent of rockfall runout zones with a distributed model using data with a support of 25 x 25 m is realistic and feasible. This is also true for data with poorer quality as the third simulation resulted in a slightly larger mean-squared error than the first simulation. Surprisingly, it also gave a smaller error than the second simulation. We investigated the cause of the large error produced by the second simulation and concluded that this was mainly caused by the combination of a high-quality digital elevation model and the loss of spatial structure in the input data due to spatial aggregation. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) The geometric processing of remote sensing images becomes a key issue in multi-source data integration, management and analysis for many geomatic applications. This paper first reviews the source of geometric distortions, compares the different mathematical models being currently used for geometric distortion modelling, details the algorithms, methods and processing steps and finally tracks the error propagation from the input to the final output data. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In a geographical information system (GIS), a conventional point-in-polygon analysis is used to determine whether a point is located inside a polygon with a Boolean result. Due to positional uncertainties existing with both the point and the polygon, the Boolean answer cannot describe the relationship of closeness between the point and the polygon. This paper aims to develop a model and to provide a continuous index - the probability value - to indicate the extent of the uncertain point located inside the uncertain polygon based upon existing research development. This probability index is derived based on probability and statistical theories considering the statistical uncertainty distributions of the point and the polygon's vertices. The associated mathematical expressions for the probability index are addressed in cases depending on the intersection between the polygon and the error ellipse of the point. The proposed probability index can provide an objective description of the relationship of closeness between an uncertain point and an uncertain polygon.
