[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Collapse is a common cartographic generalization operation in multi-scale representation and cascade updating of vector spatial data. During transformation from large- to small-scale, the dual-line river shows progressive collapse from narrow river segment to line. The demand for vector spatial data with various scales is increasing; however, research on the progressive collapse of dual-line rivers is lacking. Therefore, we proposed a progressive collapse method based on vector spatial data. First, based on the skeleton graph of the dual-line river, the narrow and normal river segments are preliminarily segmented by calculating the width of the river. Second, combined with the rules of cartographic generalization, the collapse and exaggeration priority strategies are formulated to determine the handling mode of the river segment. Finally, based on the two strategies, progressive collapse of dual-line rivers is realized by collapse and exaggeration of the river segment. Experimental results demonstrated that the progressive collapse results of the proposed method were scale-driven, and the collapse part had no burr and topology problems, whereas the remaining part was clearly visible. The proposed method can be better applied to progressive collapse of the dual-line river through qualitative and quantitative evaluation with another progressive collapse method. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Small‐area patch merging is a common operation in land use data generalization. However, existing research on small‐area patch merging has mainly focused on local compatibility measures, which often lead to area imbalances among land use types from a global perspective. To address the shortcomings of previous studies by resolving local and global concerns simultaneously, this article proposes a merging method that considers both local constraints and the overall area balance. First, a local optimization model that considers three constraints—namely, the areas of neighboring patches, the lengths of shared arcs, and semantic similarity—is established. The areas of small patches are first pre‐allocated. Subsequently, in accordance with an area change threshold for individual land use types, land use types with area changes that exceed this threshold are identified. The patches corresponding to these land use types are subjected to iterative adjustments while considering the overall area balance. Based on their area splitting abilities, the split lines for small‐area patches are determined, and small‐area patches are merged. Finally, actual data from Guangdong Province are used for validation. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of preserving the local compatibility of patches while balancing the overall area associated with each land use type. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Geological maps are an important information source used in the support of activities relating to mining, earth resources, hazards, and environmental studies. Owing to the complexity of this particular map type, the process of geological map generalization has not been comprehensively addressed, and thus a complete automated system for geological map generalization is not yet available. In particular, while in other areas of map generalization constraint-based techniques have become the prevailing approach in the past two decades, generalization methods for geological maps have rarely adopted this approach. This paper seeks to fill this gap by presenting a methodology for the automation of geological map generalization that builds on size constraints (i.e., constraints that deal with the minimum area and distance relations in individual or pairs of map features). The methodology starts by modeling relevant size constraints and then uses a workflow consisting of generalization operators that respond to violations of size constraints (elimination/selection, enlargement, aggregation, and displacement) as well as algorithms to implement these operators. We show that the automation of geological map generalization is possible using constraint-based modeling, leading to improved process control compared to current approaches. However, we also show the limitations of an approach that is solely based on size constraints and identify extensions for a more complete workflow. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The automation of generalisation is an important issue at National Mapping Agencies (NMAs) to reduce data production costs and to improve data maintenance. This paper presents the challenges for automated generalisation at European NMAs integrating a qualitative and quantitative analysis. The qualitative analysis focuses on the current strategies for automated generalisation at NMAs. The quantitative analysis extends these findings and measures the status of automated generalisation functionality at NMAs using the required and missing generalisation operators as indicators. The results are interesting for the research community, the software vendors and NMAs to streamline their efforts to accomplish full automation of generalisation processes. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Web service technologies can be used to establish an interoperable framework between different generalisation systems. In a previous article three categories of generalisation web services were identified, including support services, operator services and processing services. This paper focuses on the category of support services. In a service-based generalisation system, the purpose of support services is to assist the generalisation process by providing auxiliary measures, procedures and data structures that allow the representation of structural cartographic knowledge. The structural knowledge of the spatial and semantic context and the modelling of structural and spatial relationships is critical for the understanding of the role of cartographic features and thus for automated generalisation. Support services should extract and model this knowledge from the raw data and make it available to other generalisation operators. On the one hand the structural knowledge can be expressed by enriching map features with additional geometries or attributes. On the other hand, there exist various hierarchical and non-hierarchical relationships between map features, many of which can be represented by graph data structures. After a brief introduction to the interoperable web service framework, this paper proposes a taxonomy of generalisation support services and discusses its elements. It is then shown how the complex output of such services can be represented for use with web services and stored in a reusable fashion. Finally, the utilisation of support services is illustrated on four implementation examples of support services that also highlight the interactions with the generalisation operators that use these auxiliary services.
