This study employed ISO approach for camera pose determination with the objective of investigating the impact of a good sensor pre-calibration on a poor acquisition geometry. Within the presented works, several flights were conducted on a dike by a small UAV embedded with a metric camera and a GNSS receiver. The multi-lever-arm estimation within the BBA procedure makes it possible to merge image blocks of different configurations such as nadir and oblique images without physical constraints on camera and GNSS antenna positions. The merged image block achieves a better accuracy and the sensor self-calibrated well. The issued sensor calibration is then applied to a less preferable acquisition configuration and the accuracy is significantly improved. For a corridor acquisition scene of about 600 m , a centimetric accuracy is reached with one GCP. With the provided sensor pre-calibration, an accuracy of 3.9 cm is achieved without any GCP. The aim is to produce high quality data that can be used in metrology applications. The issue of Integrated Sensor Orientation (ISO) of camera poses using only GPS measurements is presented and discussed. The accuracy reached by our system based on sensors developed at the French Mapping Agency (IGN) Opto-Electronics, Instrumentation and Metrology Laboratory (LOEMI) is qualified. These sensors are specially designed for close-range aerial image acquisition with a UAV. Lever-arm calibration and time synchronization are explained and performed to reach maximum accuracy. All processing steps are detailed from data acquisition to quality control of final products. We show that an accuracy of a few centimeters can be reached with this system which uses low-cost UAV and GPS module coupled with the IGN-LOEMI home-made camera. When cm-level accuracy is required, the classical approach of sensor orientation does not deliver satisfactory results unless a large number of ground control points (GCPs) is regularly distributed in the mapped area. This may not be a feasible method either due to the associated costs or terrain inaccessibility.
This thesis addresses such issues by presenting a development of MAV platforms with navigation and imaging sensors that are able to perform integrated sensor orientation (ISO). This method combines image measurements with GNSS or GNSS/IMU (Global Navigation Satellite System/Inertial Measurement Unit) observations. This innovative approach allows mapping with cm-level accuracy without the support of GCPs, even in geometrically challenging scenarios, such as corridors. The presented solution also helps in situations where automatic image observations cannot be generated, e.g. over water, sand, or other surfaces with low variations of texture.
The application of ISO to MAV photogrammetry is a novel solution and its implementation brings new engineering and research challenges due to a limited payload capacity and quality of employed sensors on-board. These challenges are addressed using traditional as well as novel methods of treating observations within the developed processing software. The capability of the constructed MAV platforms and processing tools is tested in real mapping scenarios. It is empirically confirmed that accurate aerial control combined with a state-of- the-art calibration and processing can deliver cm-level ground accuracy, even in the most demanding projects.
This thesis also presents an innovative way of mission planning in challenging environments. Indeed, a thorough pre-flight analysis is important not only for obtaining satisfactory map- ping quality, but photogrammetric missions must be carried out in compliance with state regulations.Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

We extend the calibration procedure proposed by Scaramuzza et al. by replacing the residual function and joint refinement of all parameters. In doing so, we achieve a more stable, robust and accurate calibration (up to factor 7) and can reduce the number of necessary calibration steps from five to three. After introducing the camera model and highlighting the differences from the current calibration procedure, we perform a comprehensive performance evaluation using several data sets and show the impact of the proposed calibration procedure on the calibration results. [Termes IGN] orientation du capteur intégréeRésumé : (Auteur) Over the past two decades, the development of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology, inertial navigation technology and Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) and their application to sensor orientation in photogrammetry and remote sensing has led to more precise, accurate, reliable and cost efficient orientation and calibration methods and procedures. Today, most airborne photogrammetric and remote sensing systems are equipped with GNSS receivers and inertial sensors. To a large extent and more or less independently from the imaging geometry and sensor type, orientation is performed with the “direct” and “integrated” methods. In this paper we introduce a new orientation method that we call “Fast AT” for frame images. The new method combines image measurements, ground control and aerial control observations in novel quantitative and qualitative ways. Depending on project specifications, Fast AT can be a robust alternative to direct orientation and, at the very least, a fast quality control tool for any orientation task. We analyze the performance of Fast AT with analogue and digital frame imagery and draw conclusions on its general properties.
