[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Modelling fire behaviour in forest fires is based on meteorological, topographical, and vegetation data, including species’ type. To accurately parameterise these models, an inventory of the area of analysis with the maximum spatial and temporal resolution is required. This study investigated the use of UAV-based digital aerial photogrammetry (UAV-DAP) point clouds to classify tree and shrub species in Mediterranean forests, and this information is key for the correct generation of wildfire models. In July 2020, two test sites located in the Natural Park of Sierra Calderona (eastern Spain) were analysed, registering 1036 vegetation individuals as reference data, corresponding to 11 shrub and one tree species. Meanwhile, photogrammetric flights were carried out over the test sites, using a UAV DJI Inspire 2 equipped with a Micasense RedEdge multispectral camera. Geometrical, spectral, and neighbour-based features were obtained from the resulting point cloud generated. Using these features, points belonging to tree and shrub species were classified using several machine learning methods, i.e., Decision Trees, Extra Trees, Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, and MultiLayer Perceptron. The best results were obtained using Gradient Boosting, with a mean cross-validation accuracy of 81.7% and 91.5% for test sites 1 and 2, respectively. Once the best classifier was selected, classified points were clustered based on their geometry and tested with evaluation data, and overall accuracies of 81.9% and 96.4% were obtained for test sites 1 and 2, respectively. Results showed that the use of UAV-DAP allows the classification of Mediterranean tree and shrub species. This technique opens a wide range of possibilities, including the identification of species as a first step for further extraction of structure and fuel variables as input for wildfire behaviour models. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In the past few decades, temperate forests have been negatively altered by numerous anthropogenic activities and by the impact of ongoing climate change. These changes may require management actions to help preserve some forest tree species. In this sense, highly-detailed knowledge of tree growth and survival across territorial and climatic gradients will be important for forest conservation. We developed a novel approach to determine the optimal zones of forest growth and expansion through climate suitability maps, using a dense tree-ring network of four forest species in Moncayo Natural Park and high-resolution climate data. Our results showed that the mixed-effects models developed using climate data and tree size were able to predict between 65 and 80% of growth variability along the climatic gradient. All studied species were influenced by climate, and the relationship between growth and climate significantly differed along the prevailing climate gradient. Moreover, the suitability maps showed that the current species distribution is limited, and their application may serve as a tool for adaptive management in forests subjected to climate change. The aim of this paper is to examine the efficacy of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) approach for tree cover mapping based on Sentinel-2 images and to explore the potential of the Sentinel-2 data for the assessment of tree cover. Sentinel-2 is a constellation of two European satellites providing innovative wide-swath (up to 290 km), high-resolution and multispectral data (13 spectral bands at 10, 20 and 60 m spatial resolution).The study area is located in the Forest Promotion Complex, which is a part of the Knyszyn Forest Landscape Park in Poland. The SVM classification was performed on the single images (spring and summer season) and on multi-date Sentinel-2 images (images from two dates classified simultaneously). In addition, the use of high-resolution bands and a combination of the 10 m and 20 m spatial resolution data was examined. The overall accuracy for all performed classification was very high and reached the level of 96.7%–99.6%, which con-firms that SVM classification can be successfully applied for tree cover mapping. The analysis showed that the Sentinel-2 images acquired in the middle of the vegetation season, when the leaves are fully developed are more suitable for tree cover mapping than the images acquired in spring.
