Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] urbanisationIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Urbanization is nowadays a global phenomenon which is increasingly concentrating the world’s population in cities. In Switzerland, recent decades have seen an unprecedented loss of arable land due to urbanization, which has triggered amendments in the spatial planning laws with the aim of promoting urban densification. Nevertheless, despite remarkable efforts, the environmental impacts of distinctive urban patterns such as compact cities and urban sprawl remain poorly understood. One of the most remarkable environmental impacts of urbanization is the urban heat island effect, a phenomenon by which urban temperatures are warmer than in its rural surroundings. Central Europe, and therefore Switzerland, is among the regions in the world where temperatures are rising faster and the urban heat island effect is most prominent, which represents a central challenge for spatial planning. Most studies suggest that the urban heat island effect can be aggravated in compact cities, especially when considering the larger share of urban dwellers that are exposed to the highest temperatures. At the same time, the literature on the subject has seen a growing development of mitigation strategies, which suggest that the urban heat island effect can be significantly alleviated by an adequate planning of the building materials and urban green spaces. This doctoral dissertation intends to address the issues expressed above by performing a quantitative evaluation of the spatiotemporal patterns of urbanization in Switzerland and their impact on the urban heat island effect. To that end, the thesis adopts a landscape ecology perspective to quantify urban patterns and to spatially simulate the biophysical processes that underpin the urban heat island effect. The first article presents PyLandStats, an opensource library to compute landscape metrics in a repeatable and reproducible manner. In the second article, such a library is used to evaluate the spatiotemporal patterns of urbanization observed in the urban agglomerations of Bern, Lausanne and Zurich from 1980 to 2016. The results reveal that the outer zones of Bern and Lausanne are still undergoing diffusive urban expansion, whereas infill development is the dominant growth mode in both the inner and outer zones of Zurich. The thesis follows with the development of a spatially-explicit method to simulate urban heat mitigation using a recent model of urban cooling based on three biophysical mechanisms, namely tree shade, evapotranspiration and albedo. The study introduces an automated procedure to calibrate the parameters of the model, and shows that the proposed approach can outperform regression models based on remote sensing features. Then, in the fourth article, such an approach is applied to Lausanne in order to evaluate heat mitigation in a variety of urban greening scenarios which modify both the abundance and spatial configuration of the tree canopy cover. The simulations suggest a potential alleviation of the maximum nighttime temperatures of 2°C, which represents a major reduction of the human exposure to the urban heat island effect. Finally, a concluding chapter summarizes the main contributions of the dissertation and reviews key implications for urban planning in Switzerland. Overall, rather than prescribing urban densification as the customary strategy for spatial development, land use regulations and local plans should incorporate spatially-explicit evaluations of the ecosystem services provided by urban green spaces. Future research should extend the proposed approach to include further ecosystem services and explore trade-offs and spatially design solutions. Note de contenu : 1Urban greening scenarios for urban

[Termes IGN] ville durableRésumé : (auteur) Mitigating urban heat island (UHI) effects, especially under climate change, is necessary for the promotion of urban sustainability. Shade is one of the most important functions provided by urban trees for mitigating UHI. However, the cooling effect of tree shade has not been adequately investigated. In this study, we used a simple and straightforward method to quantify the spatial and temporal variation of tree shade and examined its effect on land surface temperature (LST). We used the hillshade function in a geographic information system to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of tree shade by integrating sun location and tree height. Relationships between shade and LST were then compared in two cities, Tampa, Florida and New York City (NYC), New York. We found that: (1) Hillshade function combining the sun location and tree height can accurately capture the spatial and temporal variation of tree shade; (2) Tree shade, particularly at 07:30, has significant cooling effect on LST in Tampa and NYC; and (3) Shade has a stronger cooling effect in Tampa than in NYC, which is most likely due to the differences in the ratio of tree canopy to impervious surface cover, the spatial arrangements of trees and buildings, and their relative heights. Comparing the cooling effects of tree shade in two cities, this study provides important insights for urban planners for UHI mitigation in different cities. [Termes IGN] rayonnement proche infrarougeRésumé : (auteur) Measuring the amount of vegetation in a given area on a large scale has long been accomplished using satellite and aerial imaging systems. These methods have been very reliable in measuring vegetation coverage accurately at the top of the canopy, but their capabilities are limited when it comes to identifying green vegetation located beneath the canopy cover. Measuring the amount of urban and suburban vegetation along a street network that is partially beneath the canopy has recently been introduced with the use of Google Street View (GSV) images, made accessible by the Google Street View Image API. Analyzing green vegetation through the use of GSV images can provide a comprehensive representation of the amount of green vegetation found within geographical regions of higher population density, and it facilitates an analysis performed at the street-level. In this paper we propose a fine-tuned color based image filtering and segmentation technique and we use it to define and map an urban green environment index. We deployed this image processing method and, using GSV images as a high-resolution GIS data source, we computed and mapped the green index of Milwaukee County, a 3,082 km2 urban/suburban county in Wisconsin. This approach generates a high-resolution street-level vegetation estimate that may prove valuable in urban planning and management, as well as for researchers investigating the correlation between environmental factors and human health outcomes. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (auteur) Quantifying aspects of urban design on a massive scale is crucial to help develop a deeper understanding of urban designs elements that contribute to the success of a public space. In this study, we further develop the Street-Frontage-Net (SFN), a convolutional neural network (CNN) that can successfully evaluate the quality of street frontage as either being active (frontage containing windows and doors) or blank (frontage containing walls, fences and garages). Small-scale studies have indicated that the more active the frontage, the livelier and safer a street feels. However, collecting the city-level data necessary to evaluate street frontage quality is costly. The SFN model uses a deep CNN to classify the frontage of a street. This study expands on the previous research via five experiments. We find robust results in classifying frontage quality for an out-of-sample test set that achieves an accuracy of up to 92.0%. We also find active frontages in a neighbourhood has a significant link with increased house prices. Lastly, we find that active frontage is associated with more scenicness compared to blank frontage. While further research is needed, the results indicate the great potential for using deep learning methods in geographic information extraction and urban design.
