[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) The challenges of applying process-based models to uneven-aged forests are the difficulties in simulating the interactions between trees and resource allocation between size classes. In this study, we focused on a process-based forest growth model PREBAS which is a mean tree model with Reineke self-thinning mortality and was originally developed for even-aged forests. The primary aim was to test the application of PREBAS model to uneven-aged forests by introducing different diameter at breast height (DBH) size classes to better represent the forest structure. Additionally, we introduced a new mortality model to PREBAS which is developed for uneven-aged stands and compared with the current PREBAS version in which a modification Reineke rule is used. The tests were conducted in 26 old Norway spruce dominated stands in southern and central Finland with three consecutive measurements (on average a 25-year study period). To evaluate the model performance, we compared the estimations of stand averaged diameter at breast height (D), stand averaged tree height (H), stand averaged crown base height (), stand basal area (B) and density (N) with measurements. Moreover, biomass estimations of each tree component (foliage, branch and stem) were compared to estimations from empirical models. Results showed that introducing size distributions can represent better stand structure and improve the model predictions compared with data. Moreover, the new mortality model showed promise with qualitatively more realistic results especially among the largest tree size classes. However, model bias still existed in the simulation although the predictions were improved. It revealed that further calibration of the PREBAS model with size classes should be done to better extend the model applicability to uneven-aged forests. [Termes IGN] variation temporelleRésumé : (auteur) North China Plain is the largest agricultural production center in China and wheat-maize rotation is a widespread cultivation practice in this area. As gross primary production (GPP) is a proxy of land productivity, research on its spatial-temporal dynamics helps understand the variation of grain production in wheat-maize rotation. Here, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data and ground observation data were combined to drive Vegetation Photosynthesis Model (VPM) in GPP estimation over wheat-maize rotation area during 2000–2015. Annual GPP has increased by 540.95 g C m−2 year−1 from 2000 to 2015, while total annual GPP has grown ∼150% than that of 2000. Moreover, annual GPP showed an increasing trend in the consecutively wheat-maize rotation area between 2000 and 2015. A strong linear relationship between GPP estimates and grain production demonstrated the potential of using VPM model to evaluate grain production in wheat-maize rotation area of Henan province, China. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Forest growth changes have been a matter of intense research efforts since the 1980s. Owing to the variety of their environmental causes – mainly atmospheric CO2 increase, atmospheric N deposition, changes in temperature and water availability, and their interactions – their interpretation has remained challenging. Recent isolated researches suggest further effects of neglected environmental factors, namely changes in the diffuse fraction of light, more efficient to photosynthesis, and galactic cosmic rays (GCR), both emphasized in this Discussion paper. With growing awareness of GCR influence on global cloudiness (the cosmoclimatologic theory by H. Svensmark), GCR may thus cause trends in diffuse-light, and distinguishing between their direct/indirect influences on forest growth remains uncertain. This link between cosmic rays and diffuse sunlight also forms an alternative explanation to the geological evidence of a negative correlation between GCR and atmospheric CO2 concentration over the past 500 Myr. After a careful scrutiny of this literature and of key contributions in the field, we draw research options to progress further in this attribution. These include i) observational strategies intending to build on differences in the spatio-temporal dynamics of environmental growth factors, ranging from quasi-experiments to meta-analyses, ii) simulation strategies intending to quantify environmental factor's effects based on process-based ecosystem modelling, in a context where progresses for accounting for diffuse-light fraction are ongoing. Also, the hunt for tree-ring based proxies of GCR may offer the perspective of testing the GCR hypothesis on fully coupled forest growth samples. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Tropical leaf phenology—particularly its variability at the tree-crown scale—dominates the seasonality of carbon and water fluxes. However, given enormous species diversity, accurate means of monitoring leaf phenology in tropical forests is still lacking. Time series of the Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC) metric derived from tower-based red–greenblue (RGB) phenocams have been widely used to monitor leaf phenology in temperate forests, but its application in the tropics remains problematic. To improve monitoring of tropical phenology, we explored the use of a deep learning model (i.e. superpixel-based Residual Networks 50, SP-ResNet50) to automatically differentiate leaves from non-leaves in phenocam images and to derive leaf fraction at the tree-crown scale. To evaluate our model, we used a year of data from six phenocams in two contrasting forests in Panama. We first built a comprehensive library of leaf and non-leaf pixels across various acquisition times, exposure conditions and specific phenocams. We then divided this library into training and testing components. We evaluated the model at three levels: 1) superpixel level with a testing set, 2) crown level by comparing the model-derived leaf fractions with those derived using image-specific supervised classification, and 3) temporally using all daily images to assess the diurnal stability of the model-derived leaf fraction. Finally, we compared the model-derived leaf fraction phenology with leaf phenology derived from GCC. Our results show that: 1) the SP-ResNet50 model accurately differentiates leaves from non-leaves (overall accuracy of 93%) and is robust across all three levels of evaluations; 2) the model accurately quantifies leaf fraction phenology across tree-crowns and forest ecosystems; and 3) the combined use of leaf fraction and GCC helps infer the timing of leaf emergence, maturation and senescence, critical information for modeling photosynthetic seasonality of tropical forests. Collectively, this study offers an improved means for automated tropical phenology monitoring using phenocams. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Key message: The best options to parametrize a radiative transfer model change according to the response variable used for fitting. To predict transmitted radiation, the turbid medium approach performs much better than the porous envelop, especially when accounting for the intra-specific variations in leaf area density but crown shape has limited effects. When fitting with tree growth data, the porous envelop approach combined with the more complex crown shape provides better results. When using a joint optimization with both variables, the better options are the turbid medium and the more detailed approach for describing crown shape and leaf area density.
Context: Solar radiation transfer is a key process of tree growth dynamics in forest.
Aims: Determining the best options to parametrize a forest radiative transfer model in heterogeneous oak and beech stands from Belgium.
Methods: Calibration and evaluation of a forest radiative transfer module coupled to a spatially explicit tree growth model were repeated for different configuration options (i.e., turbid medium vs porous envelope to calculate light interception by trees, crown shapes of contrasting complexity to account for their asymmetry) and response variables used for fitting (transmitted radiation and/or tree growth data).
Results: The turbid medium outperformed the porous envelope approach. The more complex crown shapes enabling to account for crown asymmetry improved performances when including growth data in the calibration.
Conclusion: Our results provide insights on the options to select when parametrizing a forest radiative 3D-crown transfer model depending on the research or application objectives.
