In this paper, the urban thermal environment and vegetation abundance in four East African cities (Khartoum, Addis Ababa, Kampala and Dar es Salaam) were characterised, providing new insights into the role and potentials of blue green infrastructure in differing climate regions. The Local Climate Zone (LCZ) framework was employed to detect the seasonal Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) derived from Landsat-8 data. Significant LST differences between LCZs in dry and rainy seasons were confirmed using a Welch's T test. The LCZs were found to offer potentially new approaches to investigating issues pertaining to urban heating in data-scarce regions. Greater surface urban heat island (SUHI) intensity during the rainy season was apparent in Khartoum and Addis Ababa, emphasising the importance of seasonality in urban thermal studies. Spatial correlations between EVI and LST within each LCZ were analysed through Moran's I and further illustrated the complex relationships of vegetation and thermal behaviour in urban areas. Despite these complexities, urban blue green infrastructure was found to moderate the SUHI, with different types of intervention required across different LCZs. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (auteur) This study aims to map the planting area of summer maize and estimate the spatiotemporal phenology information with parcel-based classification method through integration of Sentinel-1/2 data in Jiaozuo located in North China Plain. For the maize mapping, the combination of Sentinel-1/2 data with the parcel-based method has the highest classification accuracy, suggesting that the integration of Sentinel-1/2 data with parcel-based method has great potential for regional maize mapping. For the estimation of maize phenology, the dynamic threshold method is used to extract the tasseling and milk ripening date through the time series σ0VH. In order to reduce the influence of precipitation or irrigation on SAR data, a Local Minimum Value Composite (LMVC) method is proposed to filter the original time series SAR data. The systematic phenology estimation method mainly includes LMVC, S-G filtering, Fourier curve fitting and dynamic threshold points extracting. Compared with the actual phenology date by field investigation, the errors of estimated tasseling and milk ripening date are 4.3 days and 5.5 days respectively, indicating that the time series σ0VH derived from the SAR data has great potential in spatiotemporal phenology estimation of field maize. Finally, the scattering mechanism of the maize field to C-band microwave in different growth periods was analyzed. It was also found that the phenology of maize was delayed in the coal mining subsidence areas and the areas with insufficient field management. However, thorough investigations into the multiple scale impact of the 2D/3D architectural morphology on urban land surface temperature (LST) remain limited. Taking Beijing as a case study area, we quantified the contributions of the 2D/3D architectural morphology indicators and revealed their marginal effects on multiple scales using the boosted regression trees (BRT) method. The results showed that (1) the building coverage ratio and building height were the most significant factors influencing the LST across all spatial scales and seasons, (2) the 3D shape index, 3D fractal, and 3D adjacency were found to be influential factors, with sum contributions varying from 6.0% to 37.7%, and (3) in summer, the 3D shape index showed a stepwise negative correlation with the LST. The 3D fractal and 3D adjacency exhibited both positive and negative correlations with the LST. When the spatial scale was 240 m, the regulation amplitudes for the 3D shape index, 3D fractal, and 3D adjacency were 2.0°C, 1.0°C and 1.0°C, respectively. These findings provide quantitative insights that can be used to improve urban thermal environments and achieve sustainable urban development by adjusting architectural morphology. [Termes IGN] température de l'airRésumé : (auteur) There are on average 35 fatal mountaineering accidents per summer in France. On average, since 1990, 3.7 of them have occurred every summer in the Grand Couloir du Goûter, on the classic route up Mont Blanc (4809 m a.s.l.). Rockfall is one of the main factors that explain this high accident rate and contribute to making it one of the most accident-prone areas in the Alps for mountaineers. In this particular context, the objective of this study is to document the rockfall activity and its triggering factors in the Grand Couloir du Goûter in order to disseminate the results to mountaineers and favour their adaptation to the local rockfall hazard. Using a multi-method monitoring system (five seismic sensors, an automatic digital camera, three rock subsurface temperature sensors, a traffic sensor, a high-resolution topographical survey, two weather stations and a rain gauge), we acquired a continuous database on rockfalls during a period of 68 d in 2019 and some of their potential triggering factors (precipitation, ground and air temperatures, snow cover, frequentation by climbers). At the seasonal scale, our results confirm previous studies showing that rockfalls are most frequent during the snowmelt period in permafrost-affected rockwalls. Furthermore, the unprecedented time precision and completeness of our rockfall database at high elevation thanks to seismic sensors allowed us to investigate the factors triggering rockfalls. We found a clear correlation between rockfall frequency and air temperature, with a 2 h delay between peak air temperature and peak rockfall activity. A small number of rockfalls seem to be triggered by mountaineers. Our data set shows that climbers are not aware of the variations in rockfall frequency and/or cannot/will not adapt their behaviour to this hazard. These results should help to define an adaptation strategy for climbers. Therefore, we disseminated our results within the mountaineering community thanks to the full integration of our results into the management of the route by local actors. Knowledge built during this experiment has already been used for the definition and implementation of management measures for the attendance in summer 2020. Drought may reduce their carbon uptake, increasing their vulnerability to stress and affecting their growth recovery and resilience. We investigated the recent growth rates and responses to the climate and drought in eight Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) plantations located along a wide climate gradient from wetter sites in south-eastern France and north Spain to dry sites in south-eastern Spain. The cedar growth increased in response to the elevated precipitation from the prior winter to the current summer, but the influence of winter precipitation on growth gained importance in the driest sites. The growth responsiveness to climate and drought peaked in those dry sites, but the growth resilience did not show a similar gradient. The Atlas cedar growth was driven by the total precipitation during the hydrological year and this association strengthened from the 1980s onwards, a pattern related to the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). High winter NAO indices and drier conditions were associated with lower growth. At the individual level, growth resilience was related to tree age, while growth recovery and year-to-year growth variability covaried. Plantations’ resilience to drought depends on both climate and tree-level features.
