[Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (auteur) Single-photon airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems provide high-density data from high flight altitudes. We compared single-photon and linear-mode airborne LiDAR for the prediction of species-specific volumes in boreal coniferous-dominated forests. The LiDAR data sets were acquired at different flight altitudes using Leica SPL100 (single-photon, 17 points ⋅ m−2 ), Riegl VQ-1560i (linear-mode, 11 points ⋅ m−2 ), and Leica ALS60 (linear-mode, 0.6 points ⋅ m−2 ) LiDAR systems. Volumes were predicted at the plot-level using Gaussian process regression with predictor variables extracted from the LiDAR data sets and aerial images. Our findings showed that the Leica SPL100 produced a greater mean root-mean-squared error (RMSE) value (41.7 m3 ⋅ ha −1 ) than the Leica ALS60 (39.3 m3 ⋅ ha −1 ) in the prediction of species-specific volumes. Correspondingly, the Riegl VQ-1560i (mean RMSE = 33.0 m3 ⋅ ha −1 ) outperformed both the Leica ALS60 and the Leica SPL100. We found that the cumulative distributions of the first echo heights >1.3 m were rather similar among the data sets, whereas the last echo distributions showed larger differences. We conclude that the Leica SPL100 data set is suitable for area-based LiDAR inventory by tree species although the prediction errors are greater than with data obtained using the modern linear-mode LiDAR, such as Riegl VQ-1560i. Scanning can be conducted from manned aircrafts or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The scanning data are often used to calculate various attributes for small raster cells. These attributes can be used to segment the forest into homogeneous areas, called segments, micro-stands, or, like in this study, stands. Delineation of stands from raster data is equal to finding the most suitable stand number for each raster cell, which is a combinatorial optimization problem. This study tested the performance of the simulated annealing (SA) metaheuristic in the delineation of stands from grids of UAV-LS attributes. The objective function included three criteria: within-stand variation of the LS attributes, stand area, and stand shape. The purpose was to create delineations that consisted of homogeneous stands with a low number of small stands and a regular and roundish stand shape. The results showed that SA is capable of producing stand delineations that meet these criteria. However, the method tended to produce delineations where the stands often consisted of disconnected parts and the stand borders were jagged. These problems were mitigated by using a mode filter on the grid of stand numbers and giving unique numbers for all disconnected parts of a stand. Three LS attributes were used in the delineation. These attributes described the canopy height, the height of the bottom of the canopy and the variation of echo intensity within 1-m2 raster cells. Besides, a texture variable that described the spatial variation of canopy height in the proximity of a 1-m2 raster cell was found to be a useful variable. Stand delineations where the average stand area was about one hectare explained more than 80% of the variation in canopy height. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laserRésumé : (auteur) This study proposes a new geometric calibration method for satellite laser altimeters based on waveform matching to solve the problems of poor initial pointing accuracy and a lack of control data. This non-real-time method obtains ground control points without a fixed calibration field. First, a large area with stepped surfaces is chosen from the laser altimetry coverage. Then, the laser echo waveforms are simulated using digital surface model (DSM) data of the stepped features. The real echo waveform attempts to match the simulated echo waveforms through a waveform matching model using a global constraint. Next, the control points of the laser altimeter are obtained through waveform matching. Finally, a geometric calibration model for laser altimeters is proposed to compensate for laser pointing and ranging errors. Two experiments were conducted to verify the calibration method using ICESat/GLAS data and airborne large-footprint laser data. Experimental results confirm that the method is feasible and results in an improvement in the elevation accuracy for the airborne altimeter from 2 to 0.5 m. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser sur la LuneRésumé : (auteur) Only a few sites on Earth are technically equipped to carry out Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) to retroreflector arrays on the surface of the Moon. Despite the weak signal, they have successfully provided LLR range data for about 49 years, generating about 26,000 normal points. Recent system upgrades and new observatories have made millimeter-level range accuracy achievable. Based on appropriate modeling and sophisticated data analysis, LLR is able to determine many parameters associated with Earth–Moon dynamics, involving the lunar ephemeris, lunar physics, the Moon’s interior, reference frames and Earth orientation parameters. LLR has also become one of the strongest tools for testing Einstein’s theory of general relativity in the solar system. By extending the standard solution, it is possible to solve for parameters related to gravitational physics, like the temporal variation of the gravitational constant, metric parameters as well as the strong equivalence principle, preferred-frame effects and standard-model extensions. This paper provides a review about LLR measurement and analysis. After a short historical overview, we describe the key findings of LLR, the apparatus and technologies involved, the requisite modeling techniques, some recent results and future prospects on all fronts. We expect continued improvements in LLR, maintaining its lead in contributing to science. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) Filtering of low vegetation with height less than approximately 1.5 m is a challenging problem, especially in mountainous areas covered by heavy low foliage, bushes and sub-shrubberies, etc. The paper proposes an approach for obtaining a more accurate Digital Elevation Model (DEM) by removing low vegetation from point cloud. The approach combines point cloud with full waveform data, and begins by filtering point cloud by way of progressive TIN densification (PTD) method. Ground points are thus extracted, but mixed with false ground points, which are mainly from low vegetation and other manmade low objects. Gaussian decomposition by grouping Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm with F test is performed for the full waveforms corresponding to the extracted ground points. Echo widths and backscattering coefficients are calculated based on the parameters extracted from the decomposition, and used to discriminate points of low vegetation from points of other low objects, allowing the false ground points reflected from low vegetation to be labeled. New elevation values are calculated from the last echoes of the waveforms from low vegetation, and the DEM is updated by replacing the original elevations with the calculated ones. The resultants are assessed both quantitatively by check points and qualitatively by rendered DEM and contour lines generated from it. The accuracy of the refined DEM with low vegetation removal increases by 31% compared with the original DEM in the experiment, showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
