In this paper, a large number of quad-polarized SAR images are analyzed to help assess how the standard SAR imaging transformation applies to all polarization channels. Foremost, the azimuth cutoff, a parameter essentially governed by the detected wave motions, is today solely related to radar configuration and the ocean wave spectrum but not to the polarization configuration. As obtained, the analyses based on quad-polarized Radarsat-2 and Gaofen-3 products document the distinct dependence of azimuth cutoff on polarization and incidence angle. Especially for cross-polarized VH measurements, azimuth cutoff estimates are generally larger than copolarized HH ones, the latter already being larger than values estimated under VV configuration. This trend increases with the incidence angle. The systematic comparisons between SAR measurements and simulations further demonstrate that the present SAR nonlinear transformation may not properly take into account the differing coherence time associated with the multi-polarized observation of ocean scenes. In particular, to reproduce the large azimuth cutoff parameters of cross-polarized images, a reduced coherence time shall be expected. This measurable sensitivity shall enhance the capabilities of polarized SAR systems to precisely derive more ocean surface properties, especially the influence of wave breakers, by combining both the copolarization and cross-polarization measurements. [Termes IGN] transformation non linéaireRésumé : (Auteur) A new approach to relative orientation based on dual quaternions is proposed. Dual quaternions are used to express a unified description of the relative position and orientation of two images in a stereopair. The coplanarity condition equation and its linearised model based on dual quaternions are established. According to the principle of least squares adjustment with constraints, a dual quaternion can be identified and the relative-orientation parameters can then be obtained by a non-linear transformation of the components of the dual quaternion. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is feasible and more reliable and efficient than the conventional approach based on Euler angles. [Termes IGN] transformation non linéaireRésumé : (Auteur) A new learning system called a statistical self-organizing learning system (SSOLS), combining functional-link neural networks, statistical hypothesis testing, and self-organization of a number of enhancement nodes, is introduced for remote sensing applications. Its structure consists of two stages, a mapping stage and a learning stage. The input training vectors are initially mapped to the enhancement vectors in the mapping stage by multiplying with a random matrix, followed by pointwise nonlinear transformations. Starting with only one enhancement node, the enhancement layer incrementally adds an extra node in each iteration. The optimum dimension of the enhancement layer is determined by using an efficient leave-one-out cross-validation method. In this way, the number of enhancement nodes is also learned automatically. A t-test algorithm can also be applied to the mapping stage to mitigate the effect of overfitting and to further reduce the number of enhancement nodes required, resulting in a more compact network. In the learning stage, both the input vectors and the enhancement vectors are fed into a least squares learning module to obtain the estimated output vectors. This is made possible by choosing the output layer linear. In addition, several SSOLSs can be trained independently in parallel to form a consensual SSOLS, whose final output is a linear combination of the outputs of each SSOLS module. The SSOLS is simple, fast to compute, and suitable for remote sensing applications, especially with hyperspectral image data of high dimensionality.
