This restricts the range of applications particularly of remote sensing satellites like ERS-1, which are intended for the global monitoring of the earth's surface. The report describes a new technique using coded transponders, whereby objects can be labelled and, hence, unambiguously identified and located in a SAR image. The structure of the transponder signal is changed so that it can be unambiguously identified and located in the SAR data after appropriate processing. At the same time, the transponder is suppressed in the conventionally processed SAR image. With one technique for changing the structure, the SAR signal received by the transponder is modulated with a code from pulse to pulse. With the second technique, which renders the transponder completely invisible in the conventionally processed SAR image, the chirp modulation applied for the purpose of pulse compression is reversed. The techniques are analysed and measurements performed with an experimental transponder and the SAR of the ERS-1 satellite, demonstrating the validity of the technique, are described.
