This paper was carried out to analyze the role of GIS in utilizing destination identification as a way to help accomplish a sustainable landscape. The work focused on enhancing work availability considering the transport network. Areas with a higher offer of zero-vehicle lodging units have a better employment availability by travel. Furthermore, areas with a higher offer of single-parent families are at a disadvantage in general occupation openness. In this paper, GIS-based employment availabilities by walking, transit, and automobile were processed for the metropolitan territory. The same was done for work availability among neighboring square gatherings, while regulating built-environment and socio-economic variables. Understanding public travel openness is imperative for encouraging mode movements to reduce auto dependence and is fundamental for the prosperity of non-car households. Also, it is important to know the distribution of facilities such as schools, universities, malls, and other socio-economic places, which helps in rearranging these places in a better way to have effective transit and to reduce road traffic. The accessibility analysis is done through three steps: identifying the spatial distribution in the area, creating buffers around each alternative, and calculating the total number of population and services served by the network. The overall results of this study show that the proposed network will cover more than 50% of school places and workplaces in the area. It will also serve about 840,000 inhabitants, which is 34% of the total population. The previous results make the network accessible to a large number of the area’s residents and will connect them with the main attraction points in the city. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This research is motivated by the widespread use of desktop environments in the lab and by the recent trend of conducting real-world eye-tracking experiments to investigate pedestrian navigation. Despite the existing significant differences between the real world and the desktop environments, how pedestrians’ visual behavior in real environments differs from that in desktop environments is still not well understood. Here, we report a study that recorded eye movements for a total of 82 participants while they were performing five common navigation tasks in an unfamiliar urban environment (N = 39) and in a desktop environment (N = 43). By analyzing where the participants allocated their visual attention, what objects they fixated on, and how they transferred their visual attention among objects during navigation, we found similarities and significant differences in the general fixation indicators, spatial fixation distributions and attention to the objects of interest. The results contribute to the ongoing debate over the validity of using desktop environments to investigate pedestrian navigation by providing insights into how pedestrians allocate their attention to visual stimuli to accomplish navigation tasks in the two environments. [Termes IGN] travailRésumé : (Auteur) Using the newly released Census for Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) 1990, this research utilizes GIS tools to explain intraurban variations of commuting in Chicago at the Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ) level. While commute times are directly available from the CTPP, commute distances are derived from the shortest time distances through real-world road networks. GIS surface modeling is used to help identify the major employment center (CBD) and other subcenters. The explanations of commute times and distances are attempted by various measures of job accessibility : the jobs-housing balance ratio defined in a floating catchment area, distances from the CBD and subcenters, and a gravity-based index that takes the effects of all jobs into account. These measurements better explain how far people commute than how much time they spend on commuting. The best model explains over 50% of the variation of commuting among 7,835 TAZs. This is a significant improvement over existing literature, which at best explained less than 30 percent.
