[Termes IGN] système de gestion de base de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Geographical information systems are more and more based on a DBMS with spatial extensions, which is also the case for the system described in this paper. The design and implementation of a generic geographical query tool, a platform for querying multiple spatiotemporal data sets and associated thematic data, is presented. The system is designed to be generic, that is without one specific application in mind. It supports adhoc queries covering both the spatial and the thematic part of the data. The generic geographic query tool will be illustrated with spatial and thematic Cadastral data. Special attention will be given to the temporal aspects: a spatiotemporal data model will be described together with a set of views for easy querying. DBMS views play an important role in the architecture of the system: integration of models, aggregation of information, presentation of temporal data, and so on. The current production version of the geographic query tool within the Dutch Cadastre is based on GeoICT products with a relatively small market share (Ingres and GEO + +). A new prototype version is being developed using mainstream GeoICT products (Oracle and MapInfo). First results and open issues with respect to this prototype are presented. [Termes IGN] variation d'échelleRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we extend our previous work on shapebased queries to support queries on configurations of image objects. Here we consider spatial reasoning, especially directional and metric object relationships. Existing models for spatial reasoning tend to rely on pre-identified cardinal directions and minimal scale variations, assumptions that cannot be considered as given in our image applications, where orientations and scale may vary substantially, and are often unknown. Accordingly, we have developed the method of varying baselines to identify similarities in direction and distance relations. Our method allows us to evaluate directional similarities without a priori knowledge of cardinal directions, and to compare distance relations even when query scene and database content differ in scale by unknown amounts. We use our method to evaluate similarity between a userdefined query scene and object configurations. Here we present this new method, and discuss its role within a broader image retrieval framework. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) A method is presented for generalising cartographic lines using an approach based on determination of their structure. Constrained Delaunay triangulation is used to construct a skeleton of the space surrounding the lines and hence represent line features in terms of skeleton branches. Several statistical measures are used to characterise the triangulation branches. The measures enable selective generalisation of different types of line feature, leading to the possibility of userspecification of the style of generalisation. In our implementation of the approach, the triangulation is updated dynamically to allow both sides of multiple lines to be processed, while guaranteeing topological consistency between the resulting generalised lines. [Termes IGN] simulation de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Despite the recognition of cellular automata (CA) as a flexible and powerful tool for urban growth simulation, the calibration of CA had been largely heuristic until recent efforts to incorporate multicriteria evaluation and artificial neural network into rule definition. This study developed a stochastic CA model, which derives its initial probability of simulation from observed sequential land use data. Furthermore, this initial probability is updated dynamically through local rules based on the strength of neighbourhood development. Consequentially the integration of global (static) and local (dynamic) factors produces more realistic simulation results. The procedure of calibrated CA can be applied in other contexts with minimum modification. In this study we applied the procedure to simulate ruralurban land conversions in the city of Guangzhou, China. Moreover, the study suggests the need to examine the result of CA through spatial, tabular and structural validation. [Termes IGN] ruissellementRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports an investigation on the accuracy of gridbased routing algorithms used in hydrological models. A quantitative methodology has been developed for objective and dataindependent assessment of errors generated from the algorithms that extract hydrological parameters from gridded DEM. The generic approach is to use artificial surfaces that can be described by a mathematical model, thus the 'true' output value can be predetermined to avoid uncertainty caused by uncontrollable data errors. Four mathematical surfaces based on all ellipsoid (representing convex slopes), an inverse ellipsoid (representing concave slopes), saddle and plane were generated and the theoretical 'true' value of the Specific Catchment Area (SCA) at any given point on the surfaces could be computed using mathematical inference. Based on these models, tests were made on a number of algorithms for SCA computation. The actual output values from these algorithms on the convex, concave, saddle and plane surfaces were compared with the theoretical 'true' values, and the errors were then analysed statistically. The strengths and weaknesses of the selected algorithms are also discussed.
