Although techniques suited to most of the common geographical data models have been prototyped, the prominent exception has been vector topology. This paper explores whether operations that create a vectortopological dataset can benefit from parallelisation. It describes techniques for using multiple processors concurrently to create vectortopology for multiple subareas, and for stitching these subareas together to form the resultant dataset. To achieve performance gains over sequential processing, the overhead of the stitching must be less than the gains from the parallel processing of subareas. These methods are tested in the context of the conversion of raster data to polygonal vectortopology. Speedup in comparison to singleprocessor performance is achieved on both a 4processor sharedmemory Sun server and using up to 15 processors of a Cray T3E. The approach taken hides the parallelism and the management of the vectortopology in a software framework that simplifies the task of parallel application development. [Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) We show how fuzzy and rough data are transformed into a unified representation using the concept of rough fuzzy sets. We introduced a representation for rough fuzzy classifications that might be used when the classification process introduces uncertainty in the data due to vagueness and indiscernibility. We demonstrate the viability of our method by performing classification experiments using real data. The experiment uses data that have been classified using different classification schemes. To make them compatible we reclassify some data and use some additional knowledge that requires the use of rough fuzzy classifications. [Termes IGN] sous ensemble flouRésumé : (Auteur) For the evaluation of results from remote sensing and highresolution spatial models it is often necessary to assess the similarity of sets of maps. This paper describes a method to compare raster maps of categorical data. The method applies fuzzy set theory and involves both fuzziness of location and fuzziness of category. The fuzzy comparison yields a map, which specifies for each cell the degree of similarity on a scale of 0 to 1. Besides this spatial assessment of similarity also an overall value for similarity is derived. This statistic corrects the cellaverage similarity value for the expected similarity. It can be considered the fuzzy equivalent of the Kappa statistic and is therefore called KFuzzy A hypothetical case demonstrates how the comparison method distinguishes minor changes and fluctuations within patterns from major changes. Finally, a practical case illustrates how the method can be useful in a validation process. In this paper, such factors as the error of commission, the error of omission, the discrepant area and the normalized discrepant area are proposed as the error indicators of buffer analysis. Analytical expressions for the error indicators are developed as multiple integrals. A numerical integration method is recommended to find an approximation to the analytical expression. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) GIS applications have recently begun to emerge on the Internet. The management of threedimensional geographic datasets in this distributed environment poses a particularly challenging problem, which highlights the need for a good data representation. This paper presents a new multiresolution data representation: the Wavelet Triangulated Irregular Network (WTIN). Compared to the traditional cellbased Digital Elevation Model (DEM) format and the Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) format, it is more compact and suitable for scalable distributed GIS services. This format is based on the second generation wavelet theory and is specially designed for geographical height field data. The modified Butterfly scheme is used for constructing the wavelet transform. For every point in the geographic surface, only a single wavelet coefficient is used, which makes the final data representation very efficient and easy to compress. Because the transform used in the data representation is a linear filter operation, the computational efficiency is better than other multiresolution data formats for terrain surfaces. Results from numerical experiments on real data are given to demonstrate that the proposed data representation can be efficiently implemented. The results show that the proposed WTIN data format can provide multiresolution data sets, which achieve significant compression while preserving geographical features. The quality is found to be quite acceptable for geographical terrain representation.
