[Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a comprehensive approach to effectively and accurately extract coastlines from satellite imagery. It consists of a sequence of image processing algorithms, in which the key component is image segmentation based on a locally adaptive thresholding technique. Several technical innovations have been made to improve the accuracy and efficiency for determining the land/ water boundaries. The use of the Levenberg-Marquardt method and the Canny edge detector speeds up the convergence of iterative Gaussian curve fitting process and improves the accuracy of the bimodal Gaussian parameters. The result is increased reliability of local thresholds for image segmentation. A series of further image processing steps are applied to the segmented images. Particularly, grouping and labelling contiguous image regions into individual image objects enables us to utilize heuristic human knowledge about the size and continuity of the land and ocean masses to discriminate the true coastline from other object boundaries. The final product of our processing chain is a vector-based line coverage of the coastline, which can be readily incorporated into a GIS database. Our method has been applied to both radar and optical satellite images, and the positional precision of the resulting coastline is measured at the pixel level. [Termes IGN] zone inondableRésumé : (Auteur) In response to Hurricane Floyd, the Tar River crested at a record height of 4.30m above the flood stage at the river gauge station of Greenville (North Carolina, USA) on 21 September 1999. This resulted in a massive flooding in the area. To delineate the maximum flood extent, an area of 238.4 km2 along the Tar/Pamlico River, North Carolina, and within the overlapped area of Landsat 7 Thematic Mapper (TM) path 14/row 35 and path 15/row 35 scenes was studied. Three TM datasets of 28 July 1999 (path 15/row 35), 23 September 1999 (path 14/row 35) and 30 September 1999 (path 15/row 35) were analysed as preflood data, near peak data, and nine days after the peak data, respectively. The 23 and 30 September flood extent maps were derived by change detection and then verified by 85 nonflooded and flooded sites within the study area. The overall accuracies at the sites were between 82.599.3% on both inundation extent maps. Although the recorded river surface level fell 2.62 m from 23 to 30 September at the river gauge station of Greenville, comparison of the two flood extent maps on a pixel-by-pixel basis showed an agreement of 90.7% in terms of regular river channels and waterbodies, flooded areas and nonflooded areas. The 30 September map captured over 90% of the flood extent as identified on the 23 September map. These results suggest that it is possible to use remotely sensed data acquired days after a river's crest to capture most of the maximum extent of a flood occurring on a coastal floodplain. and should somewhat reduce the requirement to have concurrently remotely sensed data in mapping a flood extent on a coastal floodplain. We model speckle as additive signaldependent noise, and propose to use the normal inverse Gaussian (NIG) distribution as a statistical model for the wavelet coefficients of both the reflectance image and the noise image. A method for estimating the parameters of the proposed statistical models is presented, and we show that the NIG distribution makes excellent fits to the distributions of the wavelet coefficients of single-look synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The performance of the g-WMAP filter is tested on three single-look SAR images. We find that when the filter is used in a global mode it may severely blur the image. However, when applied in a local, adaptive mode the new algorithm has excellent de-speckling performance. Visual comparisons with the g-MAP filter show that g-WMAP tends to give better de-speckling. Quantitative comparisons in homogeneous regions using both the equivalent number of looks and the log standard deviation as measures definitely show that the g-WMAP gives better speckle filtering. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Accuracy assessment for remote sensing classification is commonly based on using an error matrix, or confusion table, which needs reference, or 'ground truthing', data to support. When undertaking change detection using numerous multi-temporal images, it is often difficult to make the accuracy assessment by the 'traditional' method, which typically requires simultaneous collection of reference data. In this study, we propose a new approach by arguing change rationality with post-classification comparison. Multitemporal Landsat TM images were classified for land use in an urban fringe area of Beijing, China and the post-classification comparison of these classified images shows change trajectories through the time series. These change trajectories were then analysed by assessing their rationality against a set of logical rules to separate cases of 'real land use change' and possible classification errors. The analvsis results show that the overall accuracy for land use change in the urban fringe area was 86%, with a fuzziness of 7%. Although it is argued that the uncertainty, still exists on classification accuracy assessed by this method. It nevertheless provides an alternative approach for more reasonable assessment when ideal simultaneous 'ground truthing' is not available.
