[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Context : Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) provides a valuable tool for the retrieval of detailed individual-tree structural parameters, but has never previously been applied to young stands under field conditions.
Aims: The aim was to explore the performance of TLS in a young tree plantation located in a heterogeneous environment in subtropical China.
Methods: We investigated 438 young trees for congruence between direct field and TLS measurements of total tree height, stem diameter at ground height, and length and height of the longest branch using correlation tests. We applied generalized linear models to examine whether congruence was affected by the observed structural parameter or extrinsic factors (e.g., potential occlusion, point cloud quality).
Results: TLS made it possible to detect trees higher than 40cm. The TLS-retrieved data were highly congruent with the data obtained from direct measurements. The poor descriptions of stems and branches of some individuals of small-sized and leaf-on tree species were due to occlusion by ground vegetation and leaf-on branches. Observed structural parameter and extrinsic factors did not explain the variance between the two approaches.
Conclusion: TLS proved to be a promising tool for high-resolution, non-destructive analyses of tree dendrometrics in young regenerating plantations.

[Termes IGN] taillisRésumé : (Auteur) • Context: One eighth of Europe’s forests are still managed as coppice. In some European countries, more than half of the forest exhibits coppice structures from the past or present coppice management. Many of these forests grow in the broadleaf zone of mountainous regions, often on steep slopes. Here, they play an important role in rockfall protection. However, it remains unclear how coppice forests should be structured for optimal rockfall protection or how the protection effect changes during the aging of the coppice.
• Aim: A few studies have applied rock trajectory analyses, but so far, no process-based model has been used to quantify the protective effect of differently structured coppice forests. The present study compared 40 coppice patches from two chronosequences in South Tyrol, North Italy, regarding their protective effect against rocks of two sizes using the rockfall simulation model Rockyfor3D.
• Results: The results indicate that coppice stands older than 30 years better protect against rockfall than medium-aged and young stands, although the old ones have lower stem densities. Surprisingly, a random stem distribution had a better protective effect than the clumped stem distribution typical for coppice stands.
• Conclusion: Implications for future management are discussed in detail, including the relevance of standards in coppice forests.

[Termes IGN] modélisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we consider a computational method for detecting trees on the basis of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. In the approach, locations, heights, and crown shapes of trees are tracked automatically by fitting multiple 3-D crown height models to ALS data of a field plot. The estimates are computed with an iterative reconstruction method based on Bayesian inversion paradigm. The formulation allows for utilizing prior information on tree shapes in the estimation. Here, the prior models are written based on field measurement data and allometric models for tree shapes. The feasibility of the approach is tested with ALS and field data from a managed boreal forest. The algorithm found 70.2% of the trees in the area, which is a clear improvement compared to a usual 2.5D crown delineation approach (53.1% of the trees detected).
