[Termes IGN] ressources forestièresRésumé : (auteur) We used remotely sensed data from the Landsat-8 and WorldView-2 satellites to estimate vegetation burn severity of the Creek Fire on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, where wildfire occurrences affect the Tribe’s crucial livestock and logging industries. Accurate pre- and post-fire canopy maps at high (0.5-meter) resolution were created from WorldView-2 data to generate canopy loss maps, and multiple indices from pre- and post-fire Landsat-8 images were used to evaluate vegetation burn severity. Normalized difference vegetation index based vegetation burn severity map had the highest correlation coefficients with canopy loss map from WorldView-2. Two distinct approaches - canopy loss mapping from WorldView-2 and spectral index differencing from Landsat-8 - agreed well with the field-based burn severity estimates and are both effective for vegetation burn severity mapping. Canopy loss maps created with WorldView-2 imagery add to a short list of accurate vegetation burn severity mapping techniques that can help guide effective management of forest resources on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, and the broader fire-prone regions of the Southwest. [Termes IGN] valeur économiqueRésumé : (auteur) Context : Evaluations of forest inventories usually end when accuracy and precision have been quantified.
Aims : We aim to value the accuracy of information derived from different remote sensing sensors (airborne laser scanning, aerial multispectral and hyperspectral imagery) and four alternative forest inventory approaches.
Methods : The approaches were (1) mean values or (2) diameter distributions both obtained by the area-based approach (ABA), (3) individual tree crown (ITC) segmentation and (4) an approach called semi-individual tree crown (SITC) segmentation. The estimated tree information was assessed and used to evaluate how erroneous inventory data affect economic value and loss due to suboptimal harvesting decisions. Field measured data used as reference come from 23 field plots collected in a study area in south-eastern Norway typical of managed boreal forests in Norway.
Results : The accuracy of the forest inventory was generally in line with previous studies. Our results show that using mean values from the area-based approach may yield large economic losses, while adding a diameter distribution to the area-based approach yielded less loss than the individual tree crown methods. Adding information from imagery had little effect on the results.
Conclusions : Taking inventory costs into account, diameter distributions from the area-based approach without additional information seems favourable.

[Termes IGN] théorie de Dempster-ShaferRésumé : (auteur) Land-use and land-cover change modeling helps us to understand the driving factors and impacts of human-induced land changes better, and depict likely future development paths. Uncertainty associated with various steps in the modeling process substantially influences the reliability of the results, but until now it has only rarely been addressed. In this study, we explore uncertainty in land-change modeling using a probabilistic approach based on Bayesian belief networks. We apply this approach to a case study of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and identify three modeling steps as sources of uncertainty: model structure, variable selection, and data preprocessing. For these three steps, we quantify the uncertainty and the respective impact on the outcome accuracy. The results indicate remarkable uncertainties in each of the steps. We demonstrate that a higher uncertainty in the land-change modeling process does not necessarily lead to a lower accuracy of the modeling outcome. Moreover, we show that the different uncertainty sources only slightly influence the ratio between quantity disagreement and allocation disagreement for the modeling outcome. We conclude that uncertainty is inherent in land-change modeling, and that future studies should address this uncertainty more explicitly to improve the robustness of modeling outcomes for science and decision-making. [Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Radargrammetry has a potential for forest inventories, based on the relationship between the canopy height model (CHM) and the forest variables such as biomass. The objective of this study is to describe the relationship between above-ground biomass and a stripmap TerraSAR-X radargrammetry CHM, with emphasis on accuracy and straightness of the relationship. The study was carried out in a spruce forest in south Norway, comprising biomass data from 145 plots of 250 m2 within 21 selected stands. Above-ground biomass for the plots ranged from 0 to 338 t/ha. We derived a digital surface model (DSM) from six TerraSAR-X stripmap acquisitions by automatic stereo matching. We subtracted a digital terrain model (DTM) from the DSM and obtained a CHM. We assigned the nearest 10 m × 10 m pixel to each field plot. The height of the CHM increased linearly with biomass with 15 t/ha/m. The rmse values were 23 t/ha (18%) at the stand level and 58 t/ha (44%) at the plot level. The tendency of curvilinearity was so weak that it could hardly be distinguished from a straight linear relationship. The straightness of the relationship may enable monitoring of biomass changes without an external DTM as input. A comparison between radargrammetry and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) showed that the relationship between the biomass and their respective CHMs was almost identical in terms of parameter estimates. The strength of the relationship was higher with InSAR. By combining ascending and descending pairs followed by editing, the performance of radargrammetry was equally good as with InSAR.
