[Termes IGN] vidéo numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) Passive microwave sensors have better capability of penetrating forest layers to obtain more information from forest canopy and ground surface. For forest management, it is useful to study passive microwave signals from forests. Passive microwave sensors can detect signals from needleleaf, broadleaf, and mixed forests. The observed brightness temperature of a mixed forest can be approximated by a linear combination of the needleleaf and broadleaf brightness temperatures weighted by their respective abundances. For a mixed forest observed by an N-band microwave radiometer with horizontal and vertical polarizations, there are 2 N observed brightness temperatures. It is desirable to infer 4 N + 2 unknowns: 2 N broadleaf brightness temperatures, 2 N needleleaf brightness temperatures, 1 broadleaf abundance, and 1 needleleaf abundance. This is a challenging underdetermined problem. In this paper, we devise a novel method that combines microwave unmixing with video segmentation for inferring broadleaf and needleleaf brightness temperatures and abundances from mixed forests. We propose an improved Otsu method for video segmentation to infer broadleaf and needleleaf abundances. The brightness temperatures of needleleaf and broadleaf trees can then be solved by the nonnegative least squares solution. For our mixed forest unmixing problem, it turns out that the ordinary least squares solution yields the desired positive brightness temperatures. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is able to unmix broadleaf and needleleaf brightness temperatures and abundances well. The absolute differences between the reconstructed and observed brightness temperatures of the mixed forest are well within 1 K. La démarche de modélisation des structures obtenues consiste à chercher une adéquation avec la distribution théorique de Weibull. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) A willingness to create precise definitions for terms describing forest resources between the National Forest Inventory (NFIs) data providers and UN international organisations dates back to the late nineties. European NFIs enhanced this harmonisation process by introducing the concepts of (i) reference definitions agreed by consensus but enforcing a more rigorous interpretation of such definitions (ii) bridges that allow for the transformation of national data into comparable data using an associated reference definition. Illustrative examples of some key definitions and case studies for generating comparable data are the core focus of this chapter. Discussions on recent harmonisation processes, including the way of working and a framework for future proposals are given by way of conclusion. [Termes IGN] image Sentinel-SARRésumé : (auteur) SAR data are well suited for the retrieval of biomass from vegetated areas. In particular, the ability of low frequencies to deeply penetrate dense vegetation, allows P band radar data to retrieve high biomass levels that can be encountered over forests, where other frequencies show their limitations. The BIOMASS mission, consisting in the launch of a P band SAR sensor, has been selected by ESA as the 7th Earth Explorer mission, will allow to estimate the world’s forest biomass and its changes. However, forests observe strong spatial differences in terms of structure or surface topography. These differences induce significant changes of the scattering mechanism occurring within a resolution cell. At global scale, the differences are obvious (for example between boreal and tropical regions), but at regional scale, strong differences can also be observed (for example gallery forests within savannahs, forest edges, or changes due to surface topography). The consideration of these changes is a major issue to improve the robustness of the inversion algorithm in order to reduce the errors of the biomass estimations. Up to now, no unique inversion method has been developed, that would be valid over the wide variety of forests types. An alternative is to propose a classification method that will allow to discriminate between forest types in terms of radar scattering behavior in order to apply the best suited algorithm. This is the aim of the present study. The focus is put on the analysis of the different polarimetric indices that can be derived from the fully polarimetric data acquired during the BIOMASS mission. Then the contribution of other data that should be concomitant to the BIOMASS mission, such as Sentinel-1 at C band or PALSAR2 at L band will also be investigated. This study will be based on the analysis of P band SAR data acquired during airborne campaigns other boreal (BioSAR 1 and 2) and tropical (TropiSAR, AfriSAR) forests, over a wide range of biomass value and terrain conditions.
